TV review – ‘The Husbands of River Song’ (Doctor Who)

Hello everyone! 🙂

This is the first time I’ve written a review on a ‘Doctor Who’ episode from last night. That’s scary!

‘The Husbands of River Song’ was shown on yesterday on Christmas Day at 5.15pm on BBC One. It starred Peter Capaldi as the Doctor who reunited with Alex Kingston as River Song from the Matt Smith era. I enjoyed watching this Christmas episode. It was strange; intriguing and mind-boggling!

The story takes place in the far future in the year 5343 on the human colony of Mendorax Dellora. The Doctor meets River Song there, but she doesn’t recognise him. In this episode, the Doctor helps River get a diamond that she ‘married’ literally and is inside her husband’s head in a giant red robot.

It’s been a while since River appeared in ‘Doctor Who’ as she was last seen in ‘The Name of the Doctor’ in 2013. It was nice to see River again. I’m not so fussed on River Song as many ‘Doctor Who’ fans seem to be, but I found it interesting to see her paired with Peter Capaldi’s Doctor in this.

I was pleased to see some nice continuity touches in this Christmas special from River’s first appearance in ‘Silence in the Library’/’Forest of the Dead’. At last River receives the sonic screwdriver she was given from that story, as that had bothered me from watching those episodes.

This might be the last time the Doctor will see River following the Christmas special, as he gives her a sad look she recognises and it sounds familiar. But for River, she will be returning to the Doctor’s life again in the Big Finish audios in ‘The Diary of River Song’ and ‘Doom Coalition 2’ with Paul McGann.

I hope to give a complete DVD review of ‘The Husbands of River Song’ my blog soon.

Bye for now.

Tim. 🙂

  1. Great review Tim, i didn’t enjoy this at all barring the last five minutes, the acting was pantomine, the plot wafer then, no tension or drama.

The robot looked like a power ranger & Greg Davies & Matt Lucas were both awful.

Sorry i can’t be more praising of the episode but your review is excellent & well written my friend.

I think the Big Finish writers with write River far better than Moffat does.

    • Thanks for your comments, Timelord Simon. Sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy this episode. I agree the storytelling and acting has gone downhill into pantomime. I don’t remember ‘Doctor Who’ being like this back in 2005-2010. I prefer the way RTD tells his stories compared to the Steven Moffat era.

The idea of a robot who could take someone’s head was pretty frightening, but the presence of Greg Davies and Matt Lucas was meant to provide comic relief (perhaps too much) to the Christmas festive feel of the episode.

I don’t know if I will listen to the BF audios with River in them, but I suppose they will be an improvement on how River’s depicted in the TV episodes. Thanks again. Tim. 🙂
