Convention Report – ‘Science of the Time Lords 2016’

science of the time lords

Hello everyone! 🙂

I’ve had a fantastic weekend! At the end of January, I went to Leicester to attend the ‘Doctor Who’ event at the National Space Centre called ‘Science of the Time Lords’. It was the best Christmas present for me as I got to see Sylvester McCoy; Sophie Aldred; Peter Davison and Sarah Sutton there.

It was a two-day event from Saturday 30th to Sunday 31st of January. I hadn’t been to the National Space Centre before and it was an amazing place. There were displays of Daleks; Cybermen and other monsters from the series as well as displays of spaceships; satellites and rockets at the venue.

I’m pleased I went for the two days as I wanted to see what the venue was like and how the days were going to turn out. It was a very successful weekend as I got to do all I wanted to do at the event. It was fun to see Sylvester and Sophie on Saturday and fun to see Peter and Sarah on Sunday!

Day 1 (Saturday 30th January 2016)

Saturday was a Seventh Doctor era day! I was so thrilled to see Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred at the event. Sylvester and Sophie played the Seventh Doctor and Ace in ‘Doctor Who’ from 1987-89.

I saw Sylvester and Sophie for three signing sessions during the day which was great as I evened the items I wanted signed by them. Before the first signing session, I got to say hello to Sophie whilst waiting in the queue. Sophie was pleased to see me as I was to see her since she’s a lovely person.

It was great to see Sylvester again, and he remembered who I was. I was amazed and wondered how he remembered me. But Sylvester became mysterious and said “That’s for me to know and you to find out” which is great! 😀 We had chats about his work in ‘Doctor Who’ as well as about ‘The Hobbit’.

I was pleased to see Sophie at the event. Poor Sophie had a cold during the day, but she coped remarkably well during the signings and panel talks she did. I enjoyed sharing some of the Big Finish audios I enjoyed with her as Ace and that my favourites were ‘The Genocide Machine’ and ‘Colditz’.

There were panel talks with Sylvester and Sophie during the day. First there was a talk with Sylvester at 11:15; then one with Sophie at 12:30; then one with Sylvester and Sophie at 2pm. A Dalek was in attendance and Sophie got to beat it up with Sylvester’s walking stick from ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’, which was hilarious to see. 😀

There were also photo shoots with Sylvester and Sophie from 3pm to 3:45 in the afternoon. I got to have photos with Sylvester; with Sophie and with Sylvester and Sophie. I had an amazing day seeing Sylvester and Sophie at the National Space Centre and wished them both well before I left that day.

Day 2 (Sunday 31st January 2016)

Sunday was a Fifth Doctor era day and was the highlight of the weekend for me. I’m a fan of Peter Davison and Sarah Sutton, who played the Fifth Doctor and Nyssa in ‘Doctor Who’ in the early 1980s.

Like yesterday, I saw Peter and Sarah for three signing sessions during the day. I also got to say hello to Sarah before the first signing session whilst waiting in the queue. Sarah knows me already and was pleased to see me too. She was so lovely to me that day and appreciated me as her biggest fan.

I was pleased to see Peter again. It was third time I saw him at a convention. I chatted to him about ‘Doctor Who’ and his appearance in a BBC production of ‘Miss Marple’ starring Joan Hickson. I told Peter that I replace Adric in the TARDIS. He laughed and said that would be okay which is great! 😀

It was great to see Sarah again and have nice chats with her. Sarah relied on my ‘Doctor Who’ knowledge when she did her panel talk. Sarah said that I could be her agent which was nice of her to say. Sarah was amazed when I told her it was the 35th anniversary of Nyssa in ‘Doctor Who’ that day.

Peter and Sarah also had panel talks during the day. First there was a talk with Peter at 11:15; then one with Sarah at 12:30; then one with Peter and Sarah at 2pm. A Dalek asked Peter about his favourite moment with a Dalek. Peter said it was pushing one out in ‘Resurrection of the Daleks’, which didn’t please the Dalek. 😀

There were also photo shoots with Peter and Sarah from 3pm to 3:45 in the afternoon. I had photos with Peter; then with Sarah and then with Peter and Sarah. Sunday was the highlight of the weekend for me, and I’m so glad that all was successful with seeing Peter and Sarah before the event finished.

I got to take many pictures of Daleks and Cybermen at the event, especially as it’s the 50th anniversary of the Cybermen this year. I wished Sylvester; Sophie; Peter and Sarah a “Happy 2016!” and gave ‘Doctor Who Timelines’ of each of their characters for them to keep which pleased them.

‘Science of the Time Lords’ was an amazing weekend for me. I came away very happy from seeing Sylvester; Sophie; Peter and Sarah from the National Space Centre and feel sad that it’s now over. I have fond memories of the ‘Doctor Who’ event and am now looking forward to the next convention.

To finish this blog post off, here are four YouTube videos I’ve made taken from the ‘Science of the Time Lords’ event. They are of Sarah Sutton and Peter Davison’s panel talks which took place on Sunday 31st of January 2016. The picture quality’s not great, but the sound is adequate for Peter and Sarah to be heard in these videos. I hope you’ll enjoy these videos as I had great fun making them. I hope to make more videos of ‘Doctor Who’ convention panels soon.

Looks like you had a great time for those two days, Tim. That would have been a really great convention, with Sylvester, Sophie, Peter and Sarah all there. They all look as though they had a good time, too. It would be nice to meet so many interesting people.

Looks like they had really good props and extras there, too. You look like you’re having fun with the Tardis console!

What a great idea to give each of them their Timelines – I bet they thought that was really great, and what a great gift idea, well done, Tim.

Really interesting report on the convention, Tim, and I liked all the photos. It’s nice to see what was happening over the whole weekend, and to hear your report on the two days.

Thanks Leigh. Glad you enjoyed my report on the ‘Science of the Time Lords’ event. I had a fantastic weekend and Sylvester; Sophie; Peter and Sarah were lovely to meet. Very pleased that you liked all the photos I put in my report.

Yes, they were very impressed with what I’d done with giving them each ‘Doctor Who’ timelines of their characters. I remember Peter folding his and putting it away to keep. I gave one to Sarah last year and she had been relying on it since. I gave her an updated version of Nyssa’s timeline as well as a list of the stories from ‘The Nyssa Challenge’ page for ‘bedtime reading’ (her words, not mine 😀 ). Sylvester and Sophie were also very impressed with their timelines too.

I was amazed with the props and displays of Cybermen and Daleks that they had at the National Space Centre. It truly was an amazing place and I wouldn’t mind going to another one of their events held there. Me at the TARDIS console was fun to do. I had the fire exit and fire extinguisher at the ready and wouldn’t leave without Nyssa joining me in the TARDIS. 😀

I hope Leigh that that there’ll be a convention close to you for you to go to. They are truly amazing events and highly recommended should you want to meet your favourite stars from ‘Doctor Who’. The events was fantastic and Sylvester; Sophie; Peter and Sarah were amazing to meet.

    Thanks. Tim. 🙂

    Hi Tim

I’m glad you had a great time. Yes, I enjoyed all the photos you posted, they were very interesting.

I’m glad that Sylvester, Sophie, Peter and Sarah were all impressed with your timelines that you had done; they are certainly great documents, so I’m sure they’ll find them interesting, as well as useful.

That’s funny that Sarah sad her list from the ‘Nyssa Challenge’ was for ‘bedtime reading’!

Sounds like you had a lot of fun in the Tardis console room, and checking out all the props.

Thanks, Tim I shall certainly keep an eye out for upcoming events and see who is going to be attending. They do sound like a lot of fun, and there would be lots of interesting people to meet.
