Convention Report – ‘Fantom Events at Memorabilia 2016’

mcm2015_birmingham_webportal

Hello everyone! 🙂

Last weekend, I attended the ‘MCM Birmingham Comic Con’, a twice-a-year two-day event at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham. ‘Fantom Events at Memorabilia’ was taking place at the event on both days. I only went on the Saturday as I had a commitment on the following Sunday.

This month in March, I saw Sarah Sutton and Mark Strickson at the ‘Fantom Events at Memorabilia’ event in Birmingham. Both Sarah and Mark played Fifth Doctor companions with Peter Davison during the 1980s in ‘Doctor Who’. Sarah played Nyssa of Traken whilst Mark played Vislor Turlough.

I’m a huge fan of Sarah’s work as Nyssa in ‘Doctor Who’ so it was a thrill to see her again at this event. Sarah was pleased to see me and I had some nice chats with her whilst at the event. Sarah was interested about me doing puppets back in Cardiff and we both share a rapport with each other.

It was also good to see Mark Strickson for the third time at a convention. I had more time to chat with Mark about his extraordinary career in TV as well as ‘Doctor Who’. I checked how he was settling in Scotland where he now lives and chatted to him about conventions and ‘Enlightenment’.

I also got to see Paul Jerricho who played the Castellan in the two stories ‘Arc of Infinity’ and ‘The Five Doctors’ and got to talk about his famous line “What?! No, not the mind probe!” 😀 I also met Catherine Schell who played the Countess in ‘City of Death’. She was very nice to me when I met her.

The day finished with me having some photo shoots with Mark Strickson and Sarah Sutton at the event.

I also had a video clip of me saying hello to Sarah at the event and telling her a joke before she left for the day, which made me happy. My best mate from school, Stephen Buckley, took the video clip of me and Sarah on the day.

Here’s the video clip of me and Sarah on YouTube. Check out Sarah’s reaction on how I tell her this joke. I’m sure you’ll find it worthwhile watching.

So to sum up, the ‘Fantom Events at Memorabilia’ at the ‘MCM Birmingham Comic Con’ event was a great day for me on Saturday. I enjoyed seeing Sarah Sutton and Mark Strickson at the event and I’m pleased I achieved what I wanted to do on the day. I’m looking forward to the next convention soon.

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂

    Hi Tim

Sounds like you had a really great day at the convention. It would have been really nice for you to meet up with Sarah Sutton again, and to see Mark Strickson. I bet it was interesting to hear more about Mark Strickson’s life and work, too.

It would have been very interesting to meet Paul Jerricho and Catherine Schell, too. I bet playing the Castellan was fun. It would have been great to hear Catherine Schell talk about playing a role in such an iconic story alongside the Fourth Doctor and Romana, and Julian Glover.

Sounds like a great outing, Tim, I’m glad you had a good time.

    Hi Leigh.

Thanks for your comments on my convention report, Leigh. I’m glad you enjoyed this. Thank you for reading.

The day went by so quickly, but I did have a nice time seeing Sarah and Mark. I’m pleased I had more time to chat with Mark compared to the previous conventions I’ve seen him at and he’s clearly a pleasant and friendly guy and easy to get on with.

I was weary about whether I should mention the ‘mind probe’ line to Paul Jerricho when I met him, but he said it first so it was okay in the end to talk about it. I got to ask Catherine about what it was like to work with Julian Glover and she enjoyed working with him. I’ve met Julian twice and he’s clearly very gentlemanly to meet at conventions.

Thanks Leigh. I had a very nice time indeed.

Hope you enjoyed my YouTube video with Sarah Sutton.

    Tim. 🙂

    Hi Tim

I did like reading your report on the convention day. It sounded like you had a great time.

Mark Strickson always sounds as though he would be a very laid-back and conversational kind of person, so it’s good that you got to have a chat with him.

That’s funny that Paul Jericho mentioned the mind probe first, that’s really good of him to have taken it on board.

I’m glad you asked Catherine what it was like to work with Julian Glover; I would imagine he would be very gentlemanly and very old-school.

I did like your video, Tim, it was great fun.

Thanks Simon. Glad my convention report; pictures and video helped to cheer you up.

Yes it doesn’t seem to get away from Paul Jerricho – that line ‘Not the mind probe’. Fortunately he was amiable about it and said it first before I did at the convention.

      Thanks. Tim. 🙂
