Quick CD review – ‘The Star Men’ (Doctor Who)

Hello everyone! 🙂

I’ve finished listening to ‘The Star Men’ with the Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan and Adric!

I greatly enjoyed this brand-new audio adventure with the Season 19 TARDIS team, starring Peter Davison, Sarah Sutton, Janet Fielding and Matthew Waterhouse! ‘The Star Men’ is the first story of a new trilogy for this Fifth Doctor team in 2017! It’s been a very gripping and exciting audio adventure!

‘The Star Men’ is by Andrew Smith, who is well-known for writing ‘Full Circle’, the first story of ‘The E-Space Trilogy’. Andrew has written more ‘Doctor Who’ stories for Big Finish lately and it was great to hear another story by him. Andrew writes for Adric again, as he first introduced him in ‘Full Circle’.

In this story, the Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan and Adric visit an observatory on the planet Gallius Ultima. But something strange is going on, as the Explorer-class ship Johannes Kepler gets destroyed from visiting the mysterious Large Magellanic Cloud. Can the Doctor and friends solve this weird mystery?

I thoroughly enjoyed the character journeys of the Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan and Adric in this audio adventure. The Doctor and Tegan get to venture into the Cloud itself whilst Nyssa and Adric remain behind at the observatory. The Star Men as villains were pretty cruel to listen to and without mercy.

The highlight of this story for me was the semi-romance that Adric forms with the girl Autumn Tace, played wonderfully by Sophie Wu. I liked how it wasn’t done over-the-top and it keeps within the character of Adric, as there are some really nice and intimate moments between Adric and Autumn.

‘The Star Men’ has indeed been a gripping audio adventure to listen to with the Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan and Adric. It has the feel of a classic story but with some lovely moments of character drama featured throughout. The concepts by Andrew Smith were also pretty clever and interesting in this.

I’m looking forward to developing this into a full review on ‘The Nyssa Challenge’ page! I’m now looking forward to the next two stories of the 2017 trilogy! Next one up is ‘The Contingency Club’!

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂

    Thanks Simon.

Glad you enjoyed my little review on ‘The Star Men’. I’m looking forward to having my CD covers of ‘Cold Fusion’ and ‘The Star Men’ signed by Sarah Sutton at a convention. I hope I’ll get to write detailed reviews on these latest Big Finish audios soon. It’ll have to be after I complete my current run of stories in ‘The Nyssa Challenge’ for this year.

I’m pleased you enjoyed this audio drama and found it well-written by Andrew Smith. I’m glad Andrew got to write for this particular TARDIS team and he writes well for Adric especially, since he introduced him in ‘Full Circle’. I’m pleased you found ‘The Star Men’ a gripping story to listen to.

Looking forward to ‘The Contingency Club’ next!

    Tim. 🙂
