Quick DVD Review – ‘Blackadder’s Christmas Carol’

Hello everyone! 🙂

I’ve now seen the first of three birthday presents from my best mate Stephen for 2017!

I enjoyed watching ‘Blackadder’s Christmas Carol’ on DVD! Yes I know, it’s too early for Christmas as it’s only June! But as Oliver Hardy said, “Do your Christmas shopping early!” 😀 Also, if I can review ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Specials throughout the year, why can’t I do it with Blackadder’s Christmas?!

I’ve been seeing more ‘Blackadder’ episodes thanks to Stephen, following my enjoyment of the complete series of ‘Blackadder Goes Forth’ which I had for Christmas on DVD last year. How fitting that I should have another ‘Blackadder’ DVD for my birthday and that it has a Christmas theme to it!

‘Blackadder’s Christmas Carol’ is of course based on the classic novel ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens. Except this one is a parody on the classic Christmas story by Richard Curtis and Ben Elton, as it sees Rowan Atkinson star as Ebenezer Blackadder and Tony Robinson as his loyal sidekick Baldrick.

Blackadder in this Christmas Special is nothing like the Blackadder seen before in previous ‘Blackadders’ (I used ‘Blackadder’ three times there! 😀 ) In fact, Blackadder is a kind-hearted soul who gets pestered by some deeply horrid people surrounding him in his life during the Victorian age!

Eventually, Blackadder gets a visit from the Spirit of Christmas and is shown visions of his ancestors from ‘Blackadder II’ and ‘Blackadder III’. Seeing how his ancestors were bad in their lives, Ebenezer Blackadder takes an example from them and becomes bad himself by the conclusion of this caper!

I was very pleased to see ancestors of Blackadder when he was in ‘Blackadder II’ and ‘Blackadder III’, having seen some episodes of those series before. I was saddened they didn’t show a future version of ‘Blackadder Goes Forth’ in the First World War, but this special was made before that series came.

There is however a future vision that Ebenezer Blackadder sees of his descendant in the Space Age, which I assume is a series that hasn’t been made (yet!) 😀  I found the Space Age future scenes slightly disappointing, but it did seem to have this very ‘Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ feel to it!

I enjoyed the performances of the cast in this Christmas Special. As well as Rowan Atkinson and Tony Robinson, there were also my favourites Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie from ‘Jeeves & Wooster’. There was also Robbie Coltrane as the Christmas Spirit and Miranda Richardson as Queen Elizabeth I.

There was also Patsy Byrne as Nursie from ‘Blackadder II’; Miriam Margolyes as Queen Victoria and Jim Broadbent as Prince Albert. Most of these characters get harassed and insulted by Ebenezer Blackadder at the end of the story which was pretty funny and enjoyable to see when I watched the DVD.

The highlight of this DVD for me was seeing Nicola Bryant as Millicent, Blackadder’s goddaughter. Nicola played Peri in ‘Doctor Who’ with the Sixth Doctor, so it was a joy to see her in this. Nicola was so funny as Millicent in this tale and she had this horrible, screeching laugh to get on your nerves! 😀

‘Blackadder’s Christmas Carol’ was fun entertainment for me to enjoy! I’m looking forward to when I see this again for Christmas later in the year. It’s an amusing parody on the ‘Christmas Carol’ story; Rowan Atkinson is great and I’m happy to have seen Nicola Bryant from ‘Doctor Who’ in this!

Thanks Stephen for this!

And thank you all for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂
