Christmas DVD review – ‘The IT Crowd’ (Series 1)

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

I’ve now seen the third of the Christmas presents given to me by my best mate from school, Stephen. I’ve seen Series 1 of ‘The IT Crowd’ on DVD! This was a sitcom series created by Graham Lineham, one of the co-creators of ‘Father Ted’. This was as bonkers a sitcom series as it could get! 😀

The series focuses on the IT department working in the basement of a fictional company called Reynholm Industries. Now this is ridiculous, since IT’s considered a major part of my work place. My IT department is on the third floor! 😀 The series revolves around three characters in that department.

‘The IT Crowd’ stars Chris O’Dowd as Roy, Richard Ayoade as Moss and Katherine Parkinson as Jen. Roy and Moss are IT nerds. Roy is work-sky and has an eye for the ladies whilst Moss is smart but lacks social skills. Jen becomes the IT department’s new head as she messes up Roy and Moss’ lives.

Of course, the three regulars are idiots and have their own eccentricities. 😀 But what do you expect? This is a sitcom from the mind of one of the creators of ‘Father Ted’. I found myself enjoying all six episodes of this first series, since ‘The IT Crowd’ is deliciously entertaining in its own measure.

The series also stars Christopher Morris as Denholm Reynholm, the manager of Reynholm Industries who’s just as idiotic as the main leads. There’s also Noel Fielding (WOW! That Noel Fielding from ‘Never Mind The Buzzcocks’?!) as Richmond Avenal, an IT technician who’s a very polite-talking goth.

The six episodes in Series 1 of ‘The IT Crowd’ are as follows. There’s ‘Yesterday’s Jam’, ‘Calamity Jen’, ‘Fifty-Fifty’, ‘The Red Door’, ‘The Haunting of Bill Crouse’ and ‘Aunt Irma Visits’. I don’t have a particular favourite episode from the series, but they’re entertaining with various highlights in them.

It’s funny when Jen tries on new shoes which are too small for her; a ridiculously long helpline number that Moss tries to remember; Jen ruins a love interest’s chances to win on ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?’, everyone thinks Jen is dead because Moss said so, etc. Have I missed anything? 😀

I believe the underlying theme of ‘The IT Crowd’ is that Roy and Moss are super clever in computers whereas people like Jen and Mr. Reynholm aren’t. Speaking of which, this series was created around 2005 and 2006. Crikey that’s going back a bit, isn’t it? Computers have changed so much since then!

I enjoyed ‘The IT Crowd’, Series 1 as a comedy series on DVD. It’s bonkers and the characters are quirky and eccentric. But whatever reason, I enjoyed this series. Series 1 ends with a caption ‘TO BE CONTINUED…’ on it. Will I watch Series 2 of ‘The IT Crowd’? Who knows? You’ll have to wait and see.

Thanks Stephen for ‘The IT Crowd’ on DVD! Really enjoyed it!

Thanks to everyone for reading this!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂

    Morning Tim.

I like the IT Crowd. I watched most of the episodes over the last year on All4 and last night I watched ‘Aunt Irma Visits’. Have you watched series 2-4 and the 2013 special?

One of the episodes isn’t avaliable on All4 (‘The Speech’) due to controversy surrounding it, but it is available on Netflix which is good. I hope to purchase the series on DVD eventually.

I like seeing Richard Ayoade in the series because I grew up in Ipswich which is where he was educated. It’s also another great creation from the mind of Graham Linehan along with ‘Father Ted’ and ‘Count Arthur Strong’.

Speaking of ‘Father Ted’, there are two other religion-centric tv shows I am interested in that I didn’t mention on the page for your review of ‘The Vicar of Dibley’ (which I will watch later). Those two shows are a sitcom from the BBC called ‘All Gas and Gaiters’ and a drama from them called ‘Ballykissangel’. Have you see/heard of either of these shows?

    Take care, WF92.

      Hi WF92,

Glad you enjoyed my review. It’s been a while since I checked out Series 1 on ‘The IT Crowd’ on DVD. I haven’t had a chance to check out the other seasons yet. Hopefully I will soon.

I have seen ‘All Gas and Gaiters’ (love that series) and I have seen a bit of ‘Ballykissangel’. I hope to review ‘All Gas and Gaiters’ on DVD someday as well as the radio series which I have on Audible.

      Many thanks for your comments.

      Tim. 🙂
