Movie Review – ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

What if ‘Jumanji’ became a video game?!

Years ago, I saw the original 1995 ‘Jumanji’ film with Robin Williams. I really enjoyed that film, finding it scary, funny and exciting at the same time. I didn’t really expect much from the brand-new movie with Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan when it was released at cinemas.

I’m not really one for remakes of movies since I prefer the originals. Except this new film is not really a remake. It’s more of a continuation from the first ‘Jumanji’ film whilst working as a standalone film at the same time. One of my work friends recommended this film to me after seeing it with her kids.

So I went to see this film at the cinema last weekend, not expecting to like it and not knowing what to expect. And in the end, I came out of the cinema feeling really happy. Because ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ is pretty good film. I did not expect to find myself enjoying the film when I watched it.

The story is pretty well-structured and straight-forward to follow, and the characters were easy enough to engage with through the performances of the actors. I found myself laughing at the funny moments during the film, though there were a few comedic innuendo moments that I found dodgy.

The film focuses on four students at Brantford High School who get sent to detention. These are Spencer, Fridge, Bethany and Martha. They get sent down to the school’s basement where they find a multiplayer action-adventure video game called ‘Jumanji’ and they literally get sucked right into it.

Originally, ‘Jumanji’ was a board game in the 1995 film. In this new film, there’s a prologue scene set in 1996 where a teenager named Alex gets the game and it transforms from a board game into a video game, because…the game can do that somehow? ‘Jumanji’ is an extraordinarily weird game! 😀

In the video game itself, our four heroes become avatars of the game’s playable characters. Spencer becomes Dwayne Johnson as Dr. Smolder Bravestone; Fridge becomes Kevin Hart as ‘Mouse’ Finbar; Martha becomes Karen Gillan as Ruby Roundhouse and Bethany becomes Jack Black as Professor ‘Shelly’ Oberon. Ha! I knew it! I knew that Jack Black was a woman inside a man’s body! Hehe! 😀

I greatly enjoyed the performances of the main stars of the movie! I think this was the first time I saw Dwayne Johnson in a movie, since he was, you know…The Rock! 😀 I was happy to see Karen Gillan in this film, as she played Amy Pond in ‘Doctor Who’ and starred in the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ films.

‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ is a very entertaining, fun-filled movie that has a pretty good story and some really enjoyable characters to engage with. I’m pleased I saw this movie at the cinema, since it was well-worth it. I didn’t expect to like this movie. It’s also a clever story about ‘Jumanji’ as a video game.

And I have to say (and I’m very sorry about this, ‘Star Wars’ fans, but it’s the truth), I enjoyed this movie more than ‘The Last Jedi’.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂
