TV Review – ‘Great British Car Journeys’ – Episode 1

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

I’ve been looking forward to seeing this documentary series. Yesterday, I saw the first episode of ‘Great British Car Journeys’, featuring Christopher Timothy and Peter Davison from ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. Originally the show was called ‘Vintage Roads Great and Small’ or ‘Vintage Roads’.

I was so pleased to see it on Channel 4 on a Saturday evening at 8 o’clock. My parents and I just watched an episode of ‘All Creatures’ beforehand. It was pretty strange to watch this series after I’d just seen Peter Davison in real-life at the ‘Science of the Time Lords’ event last weekend in Leicester.

It was also pretty strange to see Christopher Timothy in the series since he looks so different compared to when he did James Herriot in ‘All Creatures’. His voice sounds the same though. It was amazing to see Chris Timothy and Peter Davison back together as they’ve remained life-long friends.

Anyway, ‘Great British Car Journeys’ is about Chris and Peter reliving the 1930s golden age of motoring. This was interesting to see as Peter picks up Chris, getting behind the wheel of his Morgan 4/4 and exploring Britain’s vintage roads. Some of the facts about 1930s cars were very new to me!

In the first episode itself, Chris and Peter take a journey in the Highlands of Scotland as they go from Fort George through into Inverness to get to the Isle of Skye. Watching this episode brought back nostalgia for me and my parents since we’ve been to the Highlands of Scotland for summer holidays.

It was astonishing to discover that Chris and Peter have never been to the Highlands of Scotland before, especially as they drove around Loch Ness and were on the lookout for the Loch Ness Monster. It was amusing when the two came to a dead end on an unused road during bad weather.

It was also fascinating to see them take a vintage three-wheel rally car up the notorious Inverfarigaig Corkscrew as well as catch an old car ferry to the Isle of Skye. Some of the mishaps Chris and Peter went through on their car journey in Scotland were interesting. But they both managed it in the end.

The first episode of ‘Great British Car Journeys’ was fun to watch. I enjoyed seeing Christopher Timothy and Peter Davison together in this, especially as I’m currently watching ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ on DVD. I’m so looking forward to what happens next for these two on their car journeys.

Next time, Chris and Peter take a vintage car journey into England.

Stay tuned for my review on the second episode of ‘Great British Car Journeys’ next week!

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂
