Happy Easter From ‘Bradley’s Basement’ 2019/The Gospel of Mark, Chapter 16

Happy Easter everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Yes! It’s Easter Sunday today and what better way to celebrate Easter by taking a look at the final instalment of ‘The Gospel of Mark’! This seems to be good timing with my weekly blog post series on a Sunday looking into Mark’s Gospel, especially on the last chapter for today on ‘Bradley’s Basement’.

The last chapter of Mark’s Gospel shares the good news of Jesus’ resurrection and what he can mean to each of us in our lives. Please do enjoy Easter Sunday today especially with your Easter Eggs. But also remember it as a good day to remember Jesus’ resurrection. Find out how Mark’s Gospel began in Chapter 1.

The previous chapter in Mark’s Gospel was pretty dark and sad in how Jesus’ life seemingly came to an end. Jesus was taken before Pilate; he was mocked by soldiers and he was taken to be crucified on a cross where he eventually died. He was then taken away to be buried. But was this really the tragic end for Jesus?

Let’s find out how Mark’s Gospel ends in Chapter 16.

The Gospel of Mark, Chapter 16

The final chapter begins with Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome visiting Jesus’ tomb after the Sabbath was over. They brought spices with them to anoint Jesus’ body. It was very early in the morning, just after sunrise. They asked who would roll that stone away from the entrance.

But when they came to the tomb, they saw that the stone had been rolled away. The three women entered the tomb and saw a young man dressed in white sitting on the right side. The women were alarmed but the young man told them not to be. He knew they were looking for Jesus inside the tomb.

The young man told the three women that Jesus had risen and was not in the tomb. He told them to go and tell Jesus’ disciples of this news. He told them Jesus was going ahead into Galilee and will be seen just as he predicted. The three women were trembling and bewildered as they went out and fled the tomb.

When Jesus rose from the dead, he first appeared to Mary Magdalene. She went and told those who had been mourning and weeping his death. When the people were told that Jesus was alive, they did not believe it. Very soon, Jesus appeared to two men who were walking in the country. They saw him.

They then reported their news of seeing Jesus to everyone else and weren’t believed either. Jesus then appeared to his disciples when they were eating. Eventually he said to them to “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” He told them they’d be given signs on how to spread this.

Eventually, Jesus was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. Thus the disciples went out and preached to everyone in many places. The Lord worked with Jesus’ disciples and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it. The signs were put in the form of the Holy Spirit.

And that’s the end of Mark’s Gospel!
