Quick DVD Review – ‘The Batman Superman Movie’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Yeah, I wasn’t lying when I said I wanted to do a quick review on ‘The Batman Superman Movie’ once I did my 4th anniversary celebration video with Sarah Sutton. I’ve seen the animated ‘Batman Superman Movie’ on DVD at last! I really enjoyed the film! It was a really exciting spectacle to watch!

It’s been a while since I saw ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ at the cinema back in March 2016. I know it wasn’t a great film when I saw it. So I wondered if an animated full-length film version starring two DC Comics most popular superheroes would be better than the live-action one.

‘The Batman Superman Movie’ is actually a movie version of the three-parter called ‘World’s Finest’ featured in ‘Superman: The Animated Series’ back in 1997. It was originally released on home video before being re-released on DVD. I’ve not seen the ‘Superman’ animated series properly on DVD yet.

But that shouldn’t be a problem as this animated film is pretty easy to get into. I enjoyed how Batman and Superman teamed up together to fight against Lex Luthor and the Joker as villains. Honestly, I don’t know why ‘Batman v Superman’ didn’t do it like that. It would’ve been way better.

In the film, the Joker acquires Lex Luthor’s help for a fiendish scheme in Metropolis. When Bruce Wayne/Batman visits Metropolis, he soon teams up with Clark Kent/Superman in order to stop the Joker and Lex Luthor. Can they put aside their differences and work together to defeat the enemies?

Yes, the film does tackle Batman and Superman having grudges against each other especially in terms of how they solve crime. But it doesn’t have them fighting each other a lot like the live-action film did. They are seen working together and it is what I’ve wanted to see in Batman and Superman.

The film isn’t very long. Like I said, this is a movie version of a three-parter in a TV series. So each episode was 20 minutes long. Thus 20 x 3 equals 60 minutes or so. Not that I mind. The action and pacing is very good and there’s plenty of Batman and Superman fighting the Joker and Luthor in this.

The cast is as follows. Tim Daley voices Clark Kent/Superman and Dana Delany voices Lois Lane. I did enjoy the love triangle that was going on between Superman, Batman and Lois in the film. Lois easily attracts the attention of Bruce Wayne, which makes Clark jealous, though he does keep his distance.

There’s also Kevin Conroy as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Like I said, ‘The Batman Superman Movie’ is taken from the ‘Superman’ animated series. So Bruce Wayne/Batman would’ve been a guest star from his own show ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ happening simultaneously as the ‘Superman’ series.

Clancy Brown voices Lex Luthor in the film. I’ve also heard Clancy Brown voice Lex Luthor in ‘LEGO Batman: The Movie – DC Super Heroes Unite’ as well as seen him in ‘The Shawshank Redemption’. There’s also Mark Hamill…WOW!!! Mark Hamill voices…the Joker in this. Mark Hamill as the Joker!!!

Mark Hamill is well-known for playing Luke Skywalker in the ‘Star Wars’ films. I found it hard to recognise Mark Hamill as the Joker when watching ‘The Batman Superman Movie’. When he’s the Joker, he’s hardly recognisable as Mark Hamill. Clearly he’s a talented voice actor in the business. 😀

The film also features Arleen Sorkin as Harley Quinn…WOW! Harley Quinn is in the film with the Joker. There’s also Lisa Edelstien as Mercy Graves, Lex Luthor’s henchwoman; Bob Hastings as Commissioner Gordon; Efrem Zimbalist Jr. as Alfred Pennyworth and George Dzundza as Perry White.

‘The Batman Superman Movie’ has been an enjoyable ride. I’m glad I purchased the DVD of this when I was in Cardiff and it’s certainly superior than ‘Batman v Superman’. I wish there was a proper live-action version of this where Batman and Superman team up and fight the Joker and Lex Luthor!

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂
