Quick TV Episode Review – ‘Grantchester’, Series 1, Episode 1

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

As many of us are still in lockdown because of the coronavirus pandemic – please keep safe – my parents and I have decided to re-watch the ‘Grantchester’ series from beginning to end. I’m hoping to do quick reviews on each of the episodes in Series 1, 2 and 3 as we go through them in the series.

Hopefully from today, I’ll share a quick review on each Series 1, 2 and 3 episode of ‘Grantchester’ per week. I plan to do full-on detailed reviews on each ‘Grantchester’ episode in a similar vein to the ‘Call the Midwife’ episodes at a future date. I’m looking forward to catching up on ‘Grantchester’. 🙂

Just to remind you, ‘Grantchester’ is based on ‘The Grantchester Mysteries’ book series by James Runcie. From Series 1, it focuses on the murder mysteries set in the English village of Grantchester in the 1950s. The murder mysteries are solved by a local Anglican vicar and a grouchy police detective.

For Series 1 of ‘Grantchester’, James Norton stars as Sidney Chambers the vicar and Robson Green stars as DI Geordie Keating. In the first episode, Sidney agrees to help solve the death of someone that appears to be suicide, but it turns out to be a murder. Sidney meets Geordie to solve the case. 🙂

I enjoyed how Sidney and Geordie first met each other in the series’ first episode. Geordie isn’t very willing to hear Sidney’s claims that the dead man who seems to have committed suicide was actually murdered. But as they work together, Geordie listens to Sidney and the two become good friends. 🙂

This episode features the introduction of certain regular characters. First there’s Tessa Peake-Jones as Mrs. Maguire, Sidney’s housekeeper. There’s also Kacey Ainsworth as Cathy Keating, Geordie’s wife. The episode also features Morven Christie as Amanda Kendall, a girl Sidney falls in love with. 🙂

I found it interesting to see Sidney and Amanda together as I thought the two were together as a couple. But it turns out Amanda is going to be engaged to a high society man since she can’t marry a lowly vicar. I’m wondering if Amanda will get married to this high society man later on in the series.

The episode also features a dog that Amanda sends to Sidney at his home in case he feels lonely. Sidney and Mrs. Maguire don’t really approve of that dog, but I think the dog will stay around in the series. The dog ends up being named Dickens since Mrs. Maguire keeps saying…“What the Dickens?”

Series 1, Episode 1 of ‘Grantchester’ is a good beginning to the series. I’m looking forward to how Sidney and Geordie continue to work together in future murder mystery cases. From the ‘next time’ trailer, Al Weaver as Leonard Finch will appear next. Surprised he didn’t appear in the first episode.

Here’s hoping my review on Series 1, Episode 2 of ‘Grantchester’ will be up next week.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂
