Hello everyone! 🙂
Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!
My parents and I have got into the routine of watching a ‘Grantchester’ episode on DVD every Wednesday. I suppose that is one of the good things about being in lockdown because of the current pandemic – please keep safe. Anyway, let’s talk about Series 1, Episode 2 of the ‘Grantchester’ series.
In the episode, James Norton as Sidney Chambers attends the engagement party of his childhood friend, Morven Christie as Amanda. He finds it difficult to conceal his disappointment since he’s in love with Amanda. Her fiancé Tom Austen as Guy Hopkins happens to be a stuffy bloke at the party.
This episode introduces us to Sidney’s sister, Fiona Button as Jennifer who brings her boyfriend, Ukweli Roach as Johnny Johnson, who happens to be a black jazz musician. This episode also features Pip Torrens, who I’ve seen in ‘Jeeves & Wooster’, as Sir Edward Kendall, Amanda’s father. 🙂
During the party, Amanda’s engagement ring goes missing. Soon, Johnny gets accused for the stealing the ring by some of the guests, led by Carolina Main as bitchy Lilian Calthorpe. The next day, Lilian is found dead and her jewellery gets discovered in Johnny’s bag. What’s going on in this case?!
I like how Robson Green as Geordie phones up Sidney regarding Lilian’s murder and the two soon work together to solve the case. Sidney’s not convinced that Johnny is guilty in stealing the jewellery. Soon, Lilian’s husband, Harry Hadden-Paton as William is a likely suspect in this matter. 😐
This episode also features the debut of Al Weaver as new curate Leonard Finch. He’s introduced to Sidney by Pippa Nixon as Daphne Young who was one of the guests at the party. Leonard is revealed to be a homosexual in this episode and he soon helps Sidney and Geordie in solving how Lillian died.
I like how the episode features the case being solved by Sidney and Geordie with Lillian’s death and the theft of jewellery being somehow linked together. The episode once again addresses Sidney and Amanda’s relationship since they clearly love each other but Amanda isn’t very able to marry Sidney.
I also like how the episode ends with Sidney celebrating his birthday with family and friends, including Geordie as well as Tessa Peake-Jones as Mrs. Maguire. Some of the humour is very funny such as the Sidney/Mrs. Maguire cake dialogue and ‘alcohol being a problem’ for Sidney and Geordie.
Sidney and Geordie also like playing backgammon in the pub. 😀 Overall, Series 1, Episode 2 of ‘Grantchester’ has been pretty good. I’m really getting into the early seasons of ‘Grantchester’ featuring Sidney and Geordie. I’m really looking forward to how they progress with these characters.
Here’s hoping my review on Series 1, Episode 3 of ‘Grantchester’ will be up next week.
Thanks for reading!
Bye for now!
