Quick TV Episode Review – ‘Grantchester’, Series 1, Episode 4

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

It’s time for the fourth episode of Series 1 of ‘Grantchester’! Incidentally, I’ve noticed that in each Series 1 episode so far that there are flashbacks to when James Norton as Sidney Chambers was fighting in the Second World War. I’m certain this will all build up to something in the season’s finale.

Anyway, Sidney rescues Marion Taylor from a house fire. Apparently, Flora Montgomery who played Marion was in ‘Monarch of the Glen’, Series 2, Episode 4 where she played Tanya. I was surprised to find this out from my parents. I wouldn’t have recognised her had they not told me who she was. 😀

Marion’s husband, Lee Williams as Dominic accuses the pub landlord, Struan Rodger as Tobias Hall for starting the fire. Tessa Peake-Jones as Mrs. Maguire also calls Sidney ‘a stupid man’ for going in there and rescuing Marion. Um, he was trying to save Marion’s life, Mrs. Maguire. He is a hero here.

Of course that’s Mrs. Maguire’s way of being worried for Sidney’s life when he risked going in there during a house fire. I suppose that’s to be expected with Mrs. Maguire’s character. But it turns out there’s more to this house fire than it seems, as later on, Dominic Taylor gets murdered in the story.

The pointing finger goes to Tobias Hall, who denies murder. He did however blackmail Dominic. It turns out Dominic was a homosexual. Something that caused Marion to indirectly start the fire once she attempted to burn the blackmail note for Dominic’s sake. But she ended up in a state of shock. 😐

Robson Green as Geordie investigates the murder, but Sidney becomes concerned for him since he should be at home with his sick baby. There is a sense of prejudice featured in the story, especially concerning homosexuals and when Geordie arrests Dominic’s lover who is Roy Fleck Byrne as Ben. 😐

I like how Sidney works out who the real killer is and how he helps Geordie to trap him. Thankfully, Geordie returns to find his child has recovered, which I was pleased on seeing. This episode also features the return of Pheline Roggan as Hildegard Staunton. She was in the TV show’s first episode.

Sidney entertains Hildegard when she comes to see him in Grantchester and they both form a close bond. Morven Christie as Amanda is noticeably jealous once she sees Sidney entertaining Hildegard. The episode also features Al Weaver as Leonard Finch as well as Kacey Ainsworth as Cathy Keating. 🙂

Overall, Series 1, Episode 4 of ‘Grantchester’ has been a great one to watch! I’m genuinely enjoying getting into these early episodes of ‘Grantchester’ and I’m currently looking forward to what happens next. So far, the crime mysteries featured in these ‘Grantchester’ episodes are compelling.

Here’s hoping my review on Series 1, Episode 5 of ‘Grantchester’ will be up next week.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂
