Quick TV Episode Review – ‘Grantchester’, Series 1, Episode 6

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

We’ve come to the end of Series 1 of ‘Grantchester’. Overall, I’ve enjoyed Series 1 of ‘Grantchester’ and found the character journeys of James Norton as Sidney Chambers and Robson Green as Geordie Keating fascinating. I’m currently looking forward to what happens next for these two guys.

In the final episode of Series 1, police constable Jones gets murdered. A witness hears that the killer said Merlin. It leads to Sidney and Geordie investigating the Merlin factory where Geordie gets shot. Geordie gets taken to the hospital and Sidney finds himself having to solve the murder case alone. 😐

It was fascinating to see how Sidney coped without Geordie in this murder case. He even has help from Tessa Peake-Jones as Mrs. Maguire and Al Weaver as Leonard Finch when trying to get information undetected at the police station. Sidney also has to cope with some of his inner demons.

This includes having to admit to his current lady friend, Pheline Roggan as Hildegard that he spent a night with someone in the previous episode as well as coping with the fact that he may lose Morven Christie as Amanda forever. There’s a flashback scene set four years earlier with Sidney and Amanda.

Incidentally, this episode features David Troughton as Chief Inspector Benson, who takes over the murder mystery whilst Geordie’s out of commission. David Troughton’s character says the p**s and the s**t word here. Having seen him in ‘The Stranger’ series from BBV; that was so surreal to watch!

The episode also features Pip Torrens as Sir Edward Kendall, Amanda’s father as well as Kacey Ainsworth as Cathy Keating and Tom Austen as Guy Hopkins. There’s also Adam James, who I’ve seen in the ‘Doctor Who’ episode ‘Planet of the Dead’, playing James Heath. Nice to see him in this!

I like how in this episode, Sidney picks up on the clue from Geordie about who the real murderer is! Something about a ‘heart’! This episode had me guessing on who the killer might actually be. Once the real murderer was actually revealed, it came as a surprise as I thought it was someone else here.

This episode also resolves a World War II subplot that’s been going on throughout Series 1 of ‘Grantchester’. It reveals what happened when Sidney was in charge of a group of soldiers and that he actually shot one of them as a mercy killing. It was so fascinating to discover this in the episode. 🙂

Series 1, Episode 6 of ‘Grantchester’ has been a great finale. I’m not sure what’s going to happen next and what new murder cases are on the way for Sidney and Geordie. What will happen in Sidney’s relationship with Amanda next time? I’m very sure it’ll be worth looking forward in Series 2.

Here’s hoping my review on Series 2, Episode 1 of ‘Grantchester’ will be up next week.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂
