Quick TV Episode Review – ‘Grantchester’, Series 2, Episode 1

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

After enjoying Series 1 of ‘Grantchester’ on DVD, I was looking forward to checking out Series 2 of ‘Grantchester’ next  on DVD. James Norton and Robson Green return as Sidney and Geordie as they solve murder mysteries together in the Grantchester village. What mysteries will they uncover here?

In the first episode of Series 2, Sidney enjoys a day out with Geordie’s family as well as Tessa Peake-Jokes as Mrs. Maguire and Al Weaver as Leonard. I’m not sure if this episode takes place directly after the events of Series 1, Episode 6. The cast were spending a day out at the end of that episode.

And I was so surprised to see Geordie taking a swim with Sidney in the river. Sidney I can accept taking a swim in his trunks, but Geordie?! I just didn’t think that would be in him? 😀 Anyway, after that day out has finished, Sidney finds himself getting accused that he had sex with a 15-year old girl.

This warrants a return appearance of David Troughton as nasty Chief Inspector Benson. I wonder if David Troughton’s character in ‘Grantchester’ and his character in the BBV series ‘The Stranger’ are related to each other. 😀 Sadly, he’s in only one scene of this episode, which was very disappointing.

The 15-year old girl in question that has laid allegations against Sidney is Gracie Brooke as Abigail Redmond. Very soon, Abigail gets killed off in the episode. Sidney and Geordie investigate whilst the girl’s parents Neil Morrissey as Harding Redmond and Claudie Blakley as Agatha Redmond are upset.

I’ve seen Claudie Blakley in the BBC period drama TV series ‘Lake Rise to Candleford’ as well as in the 2005 film adaptation of ‘Pride & Prejudice’. The father Harding Redmond has a temper. He’s quick to judge Sidney for having sex with his daughter and ignoring what Sidney’s side of the story is here.

Abigail was found dead at the studio of Oliver Dimsdale as photographer Daniel Marlowe. This marks Daniel’s debut in the series as he would go on to become a future love interest for Leonard. The episode also has Sam Frenchum as young mechanic Gary Bell and Andrew Knott as Sam Milburn in it.

The twists and revelations featured in this episode are well-constructed in terms of how the murderer gets revealed here. I don’t think all the questions get answered in this episode though. I imagine there’s more to be revealed later in Series 2 as we progress further in the rest of the season.

Overall, Series 2, Episode 1 of ‘Grantchester’ has been great to watch. This episode also features Morven Christie as Amanda, who’s now married to Guy Hopkins. There also might be a new love interest for Sidney in Seline Hizli as Margaret Ward. I wonder how that will get developed in this. 🙂

Here’s hoping my review on Series 2, Episode 2 of ‘Grantchester’ will be up next week.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂
