Quick TV Episode Review – ‘Grantchester’, Series 2, Episode 2

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Time for another review on a ‘Grantchester’ episode I’ve seen. I enjoyed Series 2, Episode 2 of the ‘Grantchester’ series. I like how Sidney and Geordie’s murder mysteries are interconnected with how their relationship pans out and how they interact with other people in a continuous storyline. 🙂

In this episode, a lecturer named Valentine Lyall falls to his death from a Cambridge university chapel roof. That’s got to be pretty gruesome! Robson Green as Geordie asks James Norton as Sidney to help him out on the case since he was an ex-college alumnus and knows the people there.

They discover that Valentine shared a penchant for climbing high buildings with Matthew Tennyson as Kit Bartlett. A witness is certain Valentine was pushed. Geordie tries to catch up with a woman that may know something, but he gets threatened by her with a gun as she tells him to stay out of it.

I like how this episode readdresses Geordie’s incident with getting shot in Series 1, Episode 6. Geordie is also informed by Nigel Planer as college master Giles Montgomery that Lyall was a British spy in pursuit of a Russian agent called the Tsar. Geordie is reluctant to investigate this case further.

This is due to Montgomery knowing a lot about Geordie and his family, warning him about what might happen if he investigated further. But Sidney doesn’t give up and encourages Geordie to solve the case as they need to identify the spies and find the killer. This all leads to a very dramatic climax.

I like how this episode continues Sidney dealing with the aftermath of the Abigail Redmond death from the previous episode. Neil Morrisey and Claudie Blakley return as Harding and Agatha Redmond, Abigail’s parents. There’s also Sam Frenchum as Gary Bell, who was involved with the Abigail Redmond death and there’s Helen Clyro as Phyllis Bell, Gary’s mum; that gets frowned upon.

The episode also has Sidney starting to date Seline Hizli as forthright police clerk Margaret Ward. I like how this relationship is starting out and I’m sure it’ll get interesting as the series progresses. Margaret is rather forward when she wants to have a date with Sidney. It has him taken aback a bit.

Morven Christie also returns as Amanda Hopkins in this episode. She sees Sidney in Grantchester whilst her husband’s away. It doesn’t end quite so well when Tom Austen as Guy Hopkins returns to pick Amanda up and he punches Sidney, telling him to stay away from her. That’s pretty awkward. 😐

Sidney could have told Guy he was dating Margaret, couldn’t he? Anyway, Series 2, Episode 2 was enjoyable to watch. I’m curious about where the Sidney/Margaret relationship will go next and what will happen between him and Amanda. Also, what new murder mystery will take place next time? 😀

Here’s hoping my review on Series 2, Episode 3 of ‘Grantchester’ will be up next week.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂
