SPOILERS ALERT!!!
Hello everyone! 🙂
Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!
Series 2 of ‘Grantchester’ draws to a close as we’re on the penultimate episode. Things become grizzly by the time the fifth episode comes to an end. This is especially when one of the characters that has been prevalent in Series 2 gets killed off and we have a punch-out between our two leads! 😦
In the episode, Robson Green arrests a jewel thief, Matthew Jure as Eddie Jones. He accuses Geordie for having an affair with his wife Tanya Franks as Rita and believes to have been framed. Very soon, Jones dies in his prison cell and Geordie is the prime suspect since he was the last man who saw him.
Whilst starting to doubt his friend’s integrity, James Norton as Sidney seeks out to prove his innocence. These doubts come from when Geordie isn’t acting himself lately and his wife Kacey Ainsworth as Cathy believes him to be having an affair. This is something that shocks Sidney greatly.
Meanwhile, Morven Christie as Amanda helps Sidney in his attempt to get Sam Frenchum as Gary Bell an appeal when sentenced for murdering Abigail Redmond. Sadly their efforts end up being fruitless when Gary finally gets hanged. I was gobsmacked and dismayed to see that happen here. 😦
Al Weaver as Leonard continues to have a relationship with Oliver Dimsdale as Daniel Marlowe. Tessa Peake-Jones as Mrs. Maguire also has an admirer in Nick Brimble as Jack Chapman who returns to Grantchester. Peace is broken once Mrs. M and Leonard fall out with each other in this. 😐
I liked it when Mrs. Maguire stood up for Sidney once a noose gets put outside the vicarage and there were people standing outside. There’s also Neil Morrissey as Harding Redmond and Claudie Blakley as his wife Agatha, the parents of Abigail Redmond, the girl that died in Series 2, Episode 1. 😦
There’s also Helen Clyro as Phyllis Bell, Gary’s disabled mum. I liked that moment in the episode’s conclusion when there was an understanding between Agatha and Phyllis in the church. The episode also seems to focus on Gary’s hanging in the second half as opposed to the first half. Heartbreaking!
Seline Hizli as Margaret Ward makes an appearance, though she and Sidney fell out with each other in the previous episode. There’s also David Troughton as Chief Inspector Benson, who I must say hasn’t really done much in the series so far. Sidney becomes a broken man following Gary’s hanging.
He seems to have lost faith in humanity by this point and even has it out with Amanda who tries to give him hope. Sidney also can’t understand why Geordie can’t have the same compassion as he does, leading the punch-out at the end. Overall, Series 2, Episode 5 has been a rollercoaster here. 😐
Here’s hoping my review on Series 2, Episode 6 of ‘Grantchester’ will be up next week.
Thanks for reading!
Bye for now!
Tim. 🙂
