Hello everyone! 🙂
Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!
The 2016 Christmas Special of ‘Grantchester’ has the distinction of being the only ‘Grantchester’ Christmas Special to be made so far. Unlike ‘Call the Midwife’ and ‘Doctor Who’ where they would regularly make festive episodes every year, ‘Grantchester’ hasn’t done that many Christmas Specials.
I enjoyed the 2016 Christmas Special of ‘Grantchester’. It’s nice to see how characters like James Norton as Sidney and Robson Green as Geordie behave in a Christmas environment where they’re solving a murder mystery. I really wish more of these ‘Grantchester’ Christmas Specials got made. 😀
In the Special itself, as Christmas approaches in Grantchester village, Sidney prepares to marry Maimie McCoy as brassy Linda Morgan to the much older Bill Davis. Sadly, Bill is found murdered at the Davis’ family firm. Geordie and Sidney investigate and the owner of a strip club (?!) is involved. 😐
Everyone you know in the ‘Grantchester’ series appears in this Christmas Special. There’s Tessa Peake-Jones as Mrs. Maguire; Al Weaver as Leonard Finch, Kacey Ainsworth as Cathy Keating and the kids; Selina Hizli as Margaret and Morven Christie as Amanda Hopkins, who recently left her husband to be with Sidney. 🙂
It was a nice surprise to see Julian Glover make a special guest star appearance as Albert Tannen, a gruff toy-shop owner in the episode. Julian Glover is well-known to ‘Doctor Who’ fans for playing Richard the Lionheart in ‘The Crusade’ and Scaroth in ‘City of Death’. He’s also been in the James Bond movie ‘For Your Eyes Only’ and the ‘Star Wars’ movie ‘Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back’. 🙂
Amanda has troubles of her own when she gets disowned by her bigoted father, Pip Torrens as Edward Kendall. And this is at Christmas time! I found Amanda’s father treatment of her very cruel after she left Guy. This episode features Anna Chancellor as Amanda’s Aunt Cece, who is a kind lady.
When forced to leave Aunt Cece’s home, Amanda soon ends up at the vicarage where she’s helped by Mrs. Maguire and Leonard to deliver her baby. I’m surprised Mrs. M and Leonard didn’t call the midwives of Nonnatus House to pitch in! 😀 Sidney and Geordie also unmask the killer in this Special.
I like how the Special ends with everyone including Sidney, Geordie, Amanda, Mrs. M, Leonard, Cathy and the kids celebrating on Christmas Day. The mistletoe moment at the end where Sidney and Amanda kiss each other is sweet, though what the future will hold for them is to be determined.
The 2016 ‘Grantchester’ Christmas Special has been a good one to watch. I’m surprised not more ‘Grantchester’ Christmas Specials have been made. I don’t know if I’ll see the 2016 Christmas Special again around Christmas time, but I’ll certainly look forward to seeing it. I wonder what Series 3 will bring up next in ‘Grantchester’. Will it all end in happiness for Sidney and Amanda’s future together?
Here’s hoping my review on Series 3, Episode 1 of ‘Grantchester’ will be up next week.
Thanks for reading!
Bye for now!
