Quick TV Episode Review – ‘Grantchester’, Series 3, Episode 1

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

It’s time for Series 3 of ‘Grantchester’! I’m not sure how things will turn out in Series 3, but things should be very interesting for our characters including James Norton as Sidney and Robson Green as Geordie. How will they handle their personal lives as well as solve numerous crimes in Grantchester?

In the first episode of Series 3, Sidney continues to have a relationship with Morven Christie as Amanda, who recently left Tom Austen as Guy Hopkins. But things may not be plain sailing for the two since Gary Beadle as the new archdeacon Gabriel Atubo gives Sidney a rather veiled warning. 😐

Sidney also receives threatening phone calls during the episode from an unknown caller (which eventually gets known in the episode really 😀 ) Geordie soon calls Sidney up to tell him that the philanthropic Dr. Atwell has been murdered and that his body has been dumped in the church itself.

As Sidney and Geordie investigate the murder case, things become grim concerning the previous death of Dr. Atwell’s beneficiary Ivy Franklin and the connection to a psychiatric hospital that appears run down. Geordie becomes convinced the murders are in revenge for a girl named Bonnie.

Sidney happens to be innocently involved in the murder case since he officiated Ivy’s funeral. It was tense when Sidney became a potential target for the killer, who was the voice at the end of the phone. I’m pleased Amanda rescued Sidney from downing in a bath tub as the killer tried to kill him.

Things aren’t plain sailing in Geordie’s household when his daughter Esme reveals to Sidney that her parents have been arguing with each other lately. It isn’t helped when Geordie starts having an affair with Seline Hizli as Margaret Ward. This gets clearly observed by Lorne MacFadyen as Phil Wilkinson.

Al Weaver as Leonard has troubles of his own when meeting up with new Archdeacon Atubo who warns him of his interaction with fellow gay man Daniel Marlowe. I like how Leonard gets to do his crime investigations since he saw Emily Bevan as Hilary Franklin burn up a letter in connection to the murder case.

At the end of the episode, Amanda’s ex-husband Guy Hopkins gets to see his baby when brought over by Amanda and Sidney. Amanda wants to keep the baby herself but Guy is moved to see his child, admitting the mess he has made in live. Not sure how Sidney will react to this in the next story.

The first episode of Series 3 of ‘Grantchester’ has been a good one to start off this season. I don’t know how things will turn out in Sidney and Amanda’s relationship as well as Geordie having an affair behind his wife’s back. I’m sensing that things will all end in tears by the time Series 3 finishes.

Here’s hoping my review on Series 3, Episode 2 of ‘Grantchester’ will be up next week.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂
