Quick TV Episode Review – ‘Grantchester’, Series 3, Episode 4

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

This ‘Grantchester’ episode that I’m doing a quick review on is a pretty grim one to talk about. It seems that the mistakes Sidney and Geordie have made in Series 3 so far and how they handle their love lives are coming back to haunt them. And we haven’t even reached the penultimate episode! 😐

The episode opens with…James Norton as Sidney clearly having had sex with Morven Christie as Amanda. You know, for all the good Christian things he says at church, Sidney doesn’t put them into practice especially after having sex with Amanda. But then again, that accounts his flawed character.

Anyway in the episode, Miss Sutton falls to her death. Thankfully she’s not related to Sarah Sutton in ‘Doctor Who’. 😀 This was Alix Ross as single mother Josephine Sutton who worked at a factory. She was employed by Christopher Fulford as religious Ezra Garston who happens to be a hypocrite here.

Sidney and Robson Green as Geordie investigate the cause of Miss Sutton’s death. It turns out that Masonic influences are involved. I didn’t know what being a Mason was all about and it was explained to me by my parents about how men in a club did each other favours, which is interesting.

Sadly, Al Weaver as Leonard becomes tormented when he can’t go through the marriage he’s meant to have with Emily Bevan as Hilary Franklin. The engagement is eventually broken off and Leonard attempts suicide to which Sidney stops him. Oliver Dimsdale guest stars as Daniel Marlowe here too.

Tessa Peake-Jones as Mrs. Maguire also receives a visit from her long-lost husband Charlie Higson as Ronnie Maguire. And yes, I did check. Charlie Higson was the author of ‘The Beast of Babylon’, the ‘Doctor Who’ Puffin e-short story featuring the Ninth Doctor. I was so amazed to discover that here.

I was surprised to find that Mrs. Maguire’s husband was still alive. I thought he died, you see. It isn’t a happy reunion as Mrs. Maguire doesn’t want to know. Ronnie tells her that he’s terminally ill. I didn’t expect Mrs. Maguire to use the ‘sh*t’ word here. I thought Mrs. Maguire was better than that.

Geordie also gets found out about his affair with Seline Hizlie as Margaret Ward when Lorne MacFadyen as Phil Wilkinson shares it to Geordie’s wife, Kacey Ainsworth as Cathy. Things don’t look too good here. I was so amazed to see Adrian Lukis guest star as Superintendent John Baldwin here.

Sadly, after a heated argument with Gary Beadle as Archdeacon Gabriel Atubo, Sidney is seen leaving the church behind after all the hypocrisy made. I don’t know how it’s going to be resolved in the fifth and sixth episodes. I said it would end in tears for Sidney and Geordie. Didn’t expect it soon!

Here’s hoping my review on Series 3, Episode 5 of ‘Grantchester’ will be up next week.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂
