Movie Trailer Review – ‘Tom & Jerry’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

I’ve seen the new movie trailer for the 2021 movie ‘Tom & Jerry’. This was pretty exciting to see since I had heard talks about there being a live-action Tom and Jerry movie lately. Now I finally get a chance to see what it looks like. So far, I’m reasonably impressed with how the film seems to appear.

I have done quick reviews on certain Tom and Jerry cartoon films and cartoon collections themselves over the years, so it’s only fair that I share a few thoughts and predictions on what I make of the 2021 film based on the trailer. The film is currently meant to be released in March 2021.

Anyway, let’s check out the trailer.

So judging by the trailer, the film seems to have Tom and Jerry as traditional 2-D animated cartoon characters as opposed to CGI 3-D ones, which is a relief. I wouldn’t have liked it if Tom and Jerry ended up looking like Scooby-Doo in the 2000s live-action films. That wouldn’t have been right here.

Interestingly, the film is directed by Tim Story, who previously did the two ‘Fantastic Four’ films from 2005 and 2007. That’s quite a contrast doing a film about two cartoon characters compared to doing a movie about four Marvel superheroes. I’m looking forward to Tim Story’s take on Tom and Jerry. 🙂

In terms of the cast, as well as Tom and Jerry themselves, there’s Chloë Grace Moretz as Kayla, a young hotel employee and a wedding planner who hires Tom to get rid of Jerry before a wedding. I suppose Kayla’s character is a bit like Piper Perabo’s character from the ‘Rocky and Bullwinkle’ film.

There’s also Michael Peña as Terrance, who is the deputy general manager of the hotel and Kayla’s boss. Amazing to find Michael Peña in this film, having seen him in the two ‘Ant-Man’ movies from the ‘MCU’! I suppose seeing Michael Peña in something different other than the ‘Ant-Man’ films is good. 🙂

The film also features Rob Delaney as DuBros, the hotel manager; Colin Jost as Dwayne, the wedding groom, Ken Jeong as Jackie, the hotel’s chef, Pallavi Sharda as Preeta, the wedding bride and Jordan Bolger as Cameron. I’m not sure I’ve seen these actors in many things, but I’m sure they’ll be good. 🙂

Interesting to note is that there are cartoon elephants featured in the film according to the trailer. I imagine it’s meant to be for some exotic wedding with Dwayne and Preeta together. It’s also unusual to have cartoon elephants in a live-action film whilst Tom and Jerry are cartoons themselves.

There were some amusing moments featured in the film’s trailer that I liked. First off, there’s the 1989 ‘Batman’ film reference where Tom’s flying up into the sky and he does the bat against the moonlight moment. I suppose because Warner Bros did 1989 ‘Batman’, that joke’s allowed for ‘T&J’.

I’m not sure how the comedic antics and the cartoon violence will get handled in the film when it’s actually released in 2021. From judging the trailer, I imagine the film’s cartoon violence will match to what was in the original cartoon series. How far the cartoon violence will go is yet to be determined.

It also seems that Tom and Jerry don’t talk as characters like they did in the 1990s ‘Tom and Jerry’ movie. People will find that a relief since Tom and Jerry aren’t supposed to talk and I’m fine with that too. Though speaking personally, I do have quite a soft spot for the 1990s ‘T&J’ film from watching it.

So those are my current thoughts on the upcoming ‘Tom & Jerry’ 2021 film according to the film’s trailer. I’m currently looking forward to seeing the ‘Tom & Jerry’ 2021 film as it looks good in the trailer. It’ll be interesting to see how director Tim Story does his take on Tom and Jerry in the upcoming 2021 film.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂
