2 Movie Reviews – ‘Suicide Squad’ (2016) & ‘The Suicide Squad’ (2021)

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

I wanted to see ‘The Suicide Squad’, the new 2021 film by writer/director James Gunn at the cinema. Before I did that however, I decided to check out the original ‘Suicide Squad’ film which was made in 2016. I saw the original theatrical version of the 2016 ‘Suicide Squad’ film at home via Google Play. 🙂

I know there’s an extended version of 2016’s ‘Suicide Squad’, but I’ll be checking out that another time. I also know there’s the ‘Birds of Prey’ film with Harley Quinn, but I didn’t have enough time to check that film out before I saw ‘The Suicide Squad’ 2021 film, so I’ll check it out another time too. 🙂

Essentially, the two ‘Suicide Squad’ films from the world of DC Comics superheroes focus on a team of unwilling supervillains that are made to work for the US government to carry out dangerous assignments to save the world. The two films are very different in terms of their tone and approach.

In the first ‘Suicide Squad’ film directed by David Ayer, a government agency led by Amanda Waller recruits imprisoned supervillains to execute dangerous black ops missions and save the world from a powerful threat in exchange for reduced sentences. The threat happens to be an evil Enchantress. 😐

I found the first ‘Suicide Squad’ film to be okay. I wouldn’t call it great as there’s not enough time to appreciate and understand the characters (maybe that’s made up for in the extended version). The film’s also darkly lit in places, some of the dialogue is dodgy and there’s a lot of pop music to hear. 😐

The film’s cast includes Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as the Joker (who isn’t in the film much), Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Cara Delevinge as the Enchantress, Ike Barinholtz as Captain Hunter Griggs, Scott Eastwood as ‘GQ’ Edwards, Adam Beach as Slipknot and Karen Fukuhara as Katana. Some of these people die here.

Ben Affleck also makes an appearance as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Ezra Miller makes an appearance as Barry Allen a.k.a. the Flash. The first ‘Suicide Squad’ film occurs between ‘Batman v Superman’ and ‘Justice League’ (+ the Snyder Cut) since this is all part of the DC Extended Universe.

The latest film ‘The Suicide Squad’ directed by James Gunn was released at cinemas this year. Seeing the film at the cinema makes it my third cinema experience in 2021. James Gunn is known to Marvel Cinematic Universe fans for directing the two ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ films from 2014 and 2017. 🙂

James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ is a standalone sequel to the first ‘Suicide Squad’ film from 2016. It has returning cast members like Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Viola Davies as Amanda Waller and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang as well as new cast members in it.

The second ‘Suicide Squad’ film has the task force of convicts sent to destroy evidence of a giant alien starfish called Starro. And yes, as strange as it sounds, that is what the villain of this movie is – a giant starfish. Knowing how bonkers James Gunn’s writing and directing is, I’m not really surprised.

Compared to the first ‘Suicide Squad’ film where it’s mostly tame in terms of violence, this film is bonkers violent. I couldn’t believe how much gore and violence there was in this film. There’s also plenty of F-bombing and swearing featured in this film. It’s a big contrast compared to the first film!

As well as Harley Quinn, Rick Flag, Viola Davies and Captain Boomerang, there’s also Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker, Sylvester Stallone as the voice of King Shark (I had no idea he was the voice of the shark!!! :D) and there’s Peter Capaldi (well-known as the Twelfth Doctor in ‘Doctor Who’) as the Thinker. Peter Capaldi was the reason why I wanted to see ‘The Suicide Squad’.

There’s also David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man and Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2. Ratcatcher 2 has a pet rat called Sebastian and her father is played by Taika Waititi of all people. 😀 There’s also Michael Rooker as Savant, Pete Davidson (no, not Peter Davison 😀 ) as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Flula Borg as Javelin and Mayling Ng as Mongal. Again, some of these characters die in the film. There’s also Alice Braga as Sol Soria, the leader of a rebel faction on Corto Maltese, and Pom Klementieff (who is Mantis in the MCU) plays a dancer at a nightclub in the film.

The two ‘Suicide Squad’ films have been enjoyable and interesting to see. Initially, I wasn’t keen on the idea of a supervillain team featured in a movie, but I’m glad I’ve seen both the 2016 and 2021 films to satisfy my curiosity. I might check out ‘Birds of Prey’ with Margot Robbie sometime as well as the upcoming ‘Peacemaker’ series with John Cena. Mind you, I gather they’re very foul-mouthed.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂

Loved Suicide Squad I’m glad James Gunn went down the R rated route as this is why i think the original film suffers because this team are bad people so don’t expect them be heroic.

Loved Stallone as King Shark he’s my favourite action hero, i liked Peter Capaldi performance as well & erm Margot Robbie (future Mrs Timelord) was awesome as Harley Quinn.

Great review Tim, one thing I’ll say DC try different formulas & tones as Marvel stick the generic play it safe tone.

Harley Quinn movie i loathed upon first viewing however when i rewatched it on blu ray i enjoyed it? I’m a very strange person.

      Hi Simon.

Glad you enjoyed ‘The Suicide Squad’ by James Gunn. It hasn’t been that long since I saw the film (a couple of weeks or so), but I did enjoy it when I saw it at the cinema. I’m glad I saw 2016’s ‘Suicide Squad’ first before getting into the 2021 film at the cinema.

I’m pleased you enjoyed Sylvester Stallone as the Shark and Peter Capaldi’s performance in the film. I think Margot Robbie is Harley Quinn perfection. Need to check out her ‘Birds of Prey’ film sometime soon. How many Mrs. Timelords do you have then? 😀

Yeah, I’ve noticed that about Marvel playing it safe with some of their movies compared to DC. The MCU films are getting repetitive nowadays. Hence why I feel their film series needs to stop at some point.

That’s fair enough. You’re entitled to change your opinion about ‘Birds of Prey’ when revisiting it compared to your first viewing of it. I’m glad you enjoyed it a second time. Hope to check out the film soon.

      Many thanks for your comments.

      Tim. 🙂
