TV Review – ‘Grantchester’, Series 6, Episode 7

Hello everyone. 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley.

It’s time to talk about the seventh episode of Series 6 in ‘Grantchester’! I saw this episode last Friday when I was away for the ‘Bedford Who Charity Con’. I enjoyed watching this episode when I was in my hotel room in Bedford last Friday. Mind you, the episode itself can be pretty depressing in places.

When I caught up with Sarah Sutton (Nyssa in ‘Doctor Who’) in Bedford, I told her I was up-to-date with seeing all the ‘Grantchester’ episodes by that point. Sarah told me she saw this episode last Friday, but she was surprised James Norton wasn’t there anymore as it’s now Tom Brittney as the vicar. 😀

Anyway, in the episode, we see how things are for Al Weaver as Leonard who’s currently in prison. The conditions of the prison aren’t good and I couldn’t help think this was like ‘Grantchester’s version of ‘The Shawshank Redemption’. And would you know it, a murder takes place in the prison!

Leonard’s cellmate, Bobby Lockwood as Joe Davies, is accused of murdering another inmate (another homosexual like Leonard, I believe). Leonard asks for help from Tom Brittney as Will and Robson Green as Geordie. Whilst at the brutal prison, some bad memories are stirred for Geordie. 😦

It was intriguing how the murder mystery unravelled itself, especially when Leonard discovered something disturbing in the prison chaplain’s safe. It was disturbing to see how the prison governor treated his prisoners and how Will, Geordie and Leonard reacted to his pretty cold-hearted manner.

I’m not sure what’s going on for Geordie’s character and why the brutal prison stirred up bad memories for him, though it seems to be linked to his war days. It doesn’t help when it’s meant to be his and Kacey Ainsworth as Cathy’s wedding anniversary and he forgets to celebrate it with her. 😦

It also doesn’t help when he keeps meeting up with Shaun Dooley as Johnny Richards at the pub. Johnny seems to be a bad influence on Geordie. First, Geordie is late to come home from the pub. Second, Geordie turns up to a wedding anniversary party and he seems very drunk before everyone.

Emily Patrick as Tamara, Will’s stepsister is a bad influence too, especially when she got thrown out by Will’s mother and stepfather. Who could blame them? She also seems to be living in the vicarage, which Will is not happy about. Ahmed Elhaj as Henry Jones, the new curate, also appears in this episode.

I like how Will makes a better impression on Henry compared to the previous episode. He admits to Henry that he still misses Leonard, but he hopes to make him feel more welcome at the vicarage and in Grantchester. I wonder if Henry will still be the curate by the time Leonard comes out of prison. 😐

Series 6, Episode 7 of ‘Grantchester’ has been enjoyable to watch. I’m glad I saw it last Friday whilst I was in Bedford. I’m not sure how things are going to turn out in the final episode of Series 6. Will Leonard be out of prison by then? Will Geordie overcome those inner demons and bad memories? 😐

With hope, my review on Series 6, Episode 8 of ‘Grantchester’ will be up on my blog this coming weekend.

Thanks for reading.

Bye for now.

Tim. 🙂
