Hello everyone! 🙂
Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!
Before we finish 2021, let me share with you my thoughts on the first episode of the new ‘Star Wars’ series on Disney+ called ‘The Book of Boba Fett’, which was announced at the end of Season 2 of ‘The Mandalorian’. Since I enjoyed ‘The Mandalorian’, it makes sense to check out Boba Fett’s show.
Now I have to admit, I’m not exactly what you would call enamoured with Boba Fett’s character. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed his appearances in the original ‘Star Wars’ trilogy as well in ‘Attack of the Clones’ and to some extent the ‘Star Wars Holiday Special’. But he didn’t really stand out for me.
I mean, what did he do in ‘Star Wars’ before he returned in ‘The Mandalorian’? Well, he kind-of stood around a bit and looked intimidating before he fell to his ‘death’ in ‘Return of the Jedi’. That doesn’t showcase him well. But then, ‘Star Wars’ fans made him popular more than George Lucas. 🙂
I enjoyed Boba Fett’s comeback in Season 2 of ‘The Mandalorian’ and it’s great that Temuera Morrison gets to play him. So, I was looking forward to finding out what ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ was like when he took over Jabba the Hutt’s temple and he’s accompanied by Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand.
The first episode of the series called ‘Chapter 1: Stranger in a Strange Land’ is by Jon Favreau. Yes, Jon Favreau is once again the creator of ‘The Book of Boba Fett’, as he created ‘The Mandalorian’. The first episode is directed by Robert Rodrigeuz, who directed a ‘Mandalorian’ episode in Season 2.
So, how does the first episode of ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ stand out so far? Err… It’s okay. Not really a great opener to the series, but…it’s decent enough. I suppose it is early days and I’ll have to get into more of the series to appreciate where it’s going and hopefully it’ll be better than I ever anticipated.
With that said, I’m not sure I quite like the approach given to set up the series in the first episode. I mean, we start with a flashback on Tatooine detailing how Boba Fett escaped from the Sarlaac Pit in ‘Return of the Jedi’ before he gets his armour stolen by Jawas and the Tusken raiders capture him. 😐
Soon, we move to the present day where we see what Boba Fett and Fennec Shand are doing when they’ve taken control of the Hutts’ criminal empire on Tatooine. Eventually, we go into another flashback where Boba digs for pods of water before he comes up against a sand creature and kills it.
Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the flashback scenes detailing Boba’s journey to where he is now in the series with being in charge of the Hutts’ criminal empire on Tatooine. But surely, we should’ve had two sets of flashback segments and two sets of present day segments to balance the episode out. 😐
Basically, it’s first flashback; present day segment; second flashback and then the end credits roll up. I think the first episode might have ended too soon than I would’ve liked, especially when Fennec is fighting off some assassins before Boba Fett is put into a water chamber to recover when wounded.
I’m not sure why Boba is put in a water chamber to recover anyway. I know it’s something to do with coping with the nightmares that keep coming back to him, but is Boba’s way of going to sleep similar to how Ben Affleck’s Daredevil goes to sleep at times? I’m not sure what the angle is all about here. 😦
Despite that, the action sequences are very good, especially when Boba and Fennec are fighting off some assassins. I just wish Boba joined Fennec when going off to tackle some assassins on rooftops. The performances of the actors are good and Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen’s chemistry is nice. 🙂
So yeah, it’s early days for me concerning how ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ will turn out as a series. Then again, it’s the same way I felt with checking out ‘The Mandalorian’ as a series for the first time. Hopefully as the series progresses, I’ll get to enjoy more of it and appreciate its story and characters.
Stay tuned for my review on ‘Chapter 2’ of ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ soon!
Thanks for reading!
Bye for now!
