Quick ‘Muppet Show’ Season Review – Season 2

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

My parents and I have just finished watching Season 2 of ‘The Muppet Show’. We’re looking forward to checking out Season 3 next. I’ve enjoyed the past 24 weeks or so. It’s been fun to check out the 24 episodes of Season 2 of ‘The Muppet Show’ from the middle of 2021 right to the end of January 2022. 🙂

Last year, I shared my thoughts on Season 1 of ‘The Muppet Show’. My thoughts on Season 1 are more or less the same in that ‘The Muppet Show’ provides enjoyable entertainment in featuring the Muppet characters like Kermit the Frog, Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo the Great, Animal and more.

I think the quality of ‘Muppet Show’ episodes by Season 2 has been getting better by this point compared to Season 1. The TV show itself has found its identity, especially with the aforementioned and established Muppet characters that a lot of people have grown to love and enjoy over the years.

Season 2 of ‘The Muppet Show’ was shown from 1977 to 1978. As well as previous items featured in Season 1 of ‘The Muppet Show’ like ‘Veterinarian’s Hospital’, ‘At the Dance’, ‘Gonzo’s Stunts’, ‘Muppet Labs’ (Beaker joins Dr. Bunsen Honeydew this time round), there are also some new items.

One of these new items is ‘Pigs In Space’. This is where Miss Piggy joins Captain Link Hogthrob and Dr. Julius Strangepork on a sketch show that occurs in outer space and is a parody of ‘Star Trek’. I’ve enjoyed ‘Pigs In Space’, especially when Miss Piggy tells the Captain he ‘pushed the wrong button’. 🙂

There’s also a vast array of guest stars appearing in each of the episodes of Season 2 here. These guests include the likes of Don Knotts, Milton Berle, Judy Collins, Nancy Walker, Edgar Bergen, Steve Martin, Bernadette Peters, Elton John, Julie Andrews, Bob Hope, John Cleese and Cloris Leachman. 🙂

I enjoyed the John Cleese episode very much, since he played Basil Fawlty in ‘Fawlty Towers’. It was funny when John Cleese played a pirate in a ‘Pigs In Space’ sketch where he confronted only Captain Link Hogthrob. John Cleese also does a bad job of untangling Gonzo’s elongated arms in the episode.

One of the things I noticed about the Don Knotts episode on Disney+ is that a portion of it is cut, concerning the song ‘Lullaby of Birdland’. Not sure why it was cut, but it might have to do with music rights to the song. The cut is very noticeable, especially when you’re viewing the episode on Disney+.

Thankfully, I have the unedited version of the episode to watch on DVD if I want to. 🙂 It was nice to see Milton Berle do a musical number with Fozzie Bear in his episode. I’ve seen Milton Berle in the Glenn Miller film ‘Sun Valley Serenade’ and he played Louie the Lilac in the 1960s ‘Batman’ series. 🙂

Judy Collins happens to have a nice singing voice when I watched her in her ‘Muppet Show’ episode. I enjoyed Nancy Walker’s episode, especially when Fozzie took over running the show from Kermit. I’ve also seen Nancy Walker star in one of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland‘s films called ‘Girl Crazy’.

It was nice to see Edgar Bergan along with his friends Mortimer Snerd and Charlie McCarthy, who I’ve seen in ‘Fun and Fancy Free’. I enjoyed Steve Martin’s episode (having seen him in the ‘Cheaper by the Dozen’ films and ‘Sgt. Bilko’), though it was strange the Muppets didn’t really do a show then.

Rudolf Nureyev also appears in Season 2 of ‘The Muppet Show’. It was also fun to see Elton John, knowing him for composing songs for films like ‘The Lion King’ (both 1994 and 2019 versions). I also enjoyed Julie Andrews in her episode, having seen her in ‘The Sound of Music’ and ‘Mary Poppins’. 🙂

I recall getting Season 2 of ‘The Muppet Show’ on DVD for my Dad’s birthday one November. I think I was doing my Cardiff University course at the time. It was nice to revisit Season 2 of ‘The Muppet Show’ on Disney+ lately. I’m currently looking forward to revisiting Season 3 of the show on Disney+.

By the way, in Bernadette Peters’ episode, Sam the Eagle’s story about the ant and the grasshopper before it got messed up was funny – as the grasshopper drove his sports car to Florida and the ant got stepped on. 😀

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂
