Movie Review – ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Well, I’ve seen ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’, the sequel to the 2020 film ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’. I’ve been looking forward to the sequel since seeing the first ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie two years ago. And I’m happy to say, I had a fun time watching the second film. It’s arguably better than the first one. 😀

Already this movie has been ranked as the ‘#1 Movie in the UK’ and ‘The Must-See Movie of the Easter Holidays’, according to the poster I’ve added to this review. 😀 With the first ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie, I consider it as a pretty decent introduction to the world of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’.

Here in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’, there are more ‘Sonic the Hedgehogy’ elements compared to the first film. Even though I’ve never played ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ games from the world of ♪SEGA!!!!!♫ (See, I did it again! 😀 ), it’s nice to see new characters like Tails and Knuckles joining Sonic in this film.

The film sees Sonic settling in with the Wachowskis – Tom and Maddie – in Green Hill. But Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero – calling himself Blue Justice. Honestly, Blue Blurr is a much better name. 😀 Very soon, Sonic is put to the test when the evil Dr. Robotnik returns.

But Robotnik isn’t alone. He’s joined by his new partner, Knuckles, who’s in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilisations. Sonic is saved by his new sidekick Tails, and together they embark on this globe-trotting journey to find the great emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.

It was great to see and hear most of the cast from the first ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ film return in the second film. Sonic is once again voiced by Ben Schwartz. Tails, Sonic’s sidekick, is voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who has voiced Tails in a number of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ games and cartoon shows.

And there’s Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba. Thankfully, Idris Elba doesn’t swear a lot like he did in 2021‘s ‘The Suicide Squad’. 😀 I enjoyed Knuckles’ character very much in the film. Idris Elba voices him well, playing him seriously as an echidna warrior with honour, which adds well to the comedy. 🙂

The highlight performance for me of course is Jim Carrey who returns as Dr. Robotnik. I know he’s way over-the-top in his films, but that’s what attracts me to him. He’s having fun playing Robotnik and he always delivers very entertaining performances. If this is his last film, at least it’s on a high. 😀

It was also good to see James Marsden and Tika Sumpter back as Tom and Maddie Wachowski in the film, although they don’t get to appear much until the film’s second half. There’s also Natasha Rothwell as Rachel, Maddie’s older sister and Shemar Moore as Randall, Rachel’s fiancé in the film. 🙂

There’s Adam Pally as Wade Whipple, Green Hill’s deputy sheriff and Tom’s friend; Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone, Robotnik’s loyal assistant; and Tom Butler as Commander Walters, the former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and now the founder and leader of military organization G.U.N.

So, essentially…U.N.I.T. Yeah, I know this isn’t ‘Doctor Who’, but G.U.N. does the same thing with investigating alien life so it’s ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’s version of U.N.I.T. There’s also Melody Nosipho Niemann as Jojo, Rachel’s daughter. And of course, let’s not forget Tom’s best dog friend…Ozzie. 😀

I liked it when the film depicted video game-like scenes, especially when Robotnik and Knuckles as well as Sonic had to pass through dangerous booby-trap corridors in the temple of the Master Emerald. There’s also the big fight between Sonic, Tails and Knuckles against Robotnik’s giant robot.

‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ has been a fun film to check out at the cinema, especially with Jim Carrey playing Dr. Robotnik in it. When I saw the film at the cinema recently, the screen room was packed with kids watching this film. It does show how popular the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ films have become.

I look forward to revisiting ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ on DVD/Blu-ray soon in the future.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂

I played the games religiously back in the 90’s on my Sega Megadrive& the Mega CD ah great times.

Pity Jim Carrey is in these films because I’d otherwise enjoy watching them but his awful over the top antics is a big No No why i can’t watch these movies he is one of a few actors i can’t stand to watch i find him very annoying.

As always a excellent review Tim & I’m glad you enjoyed the movie.

      Hi Simon,

Thanks for your comments. Glad you enjoyed my review. I know you and I won’t see eye-to-eye on Jim Carrey as I find him entertaining whereas you don’t. I’m glad you have fond memories of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ when playing the video games. Hopefully sometime in future I can review more ‘Sonic’-related stuff such as the cartoon shows and the OVA movie.

      Many thanks,

      Tim 🙂

    Great review Tim.

It was nice to finally check out the second ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie. And boy was it worth it. 😀 All the performances were great, even Jim Carrey. He could be over-the-top at times, but it was something of a guilty pleasure. The music scene on the robot reminded me of the Master’s in ‘The Power of the Doctor’. And what did you think of the in-credits sequence? Good setup for another sequel I think.

Have you heard of ‘The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog’? It’s an interactive graphic novel with some bits of gameplay in it, not too much though. I believe the only official way to get it is on PC by downloading it from Steam, so your best bet may be to watch it on YouTube, as it has been uploaded on there.

I won’t do a review of this movie anytime soon. I’ll probably revisit the first and review that beforehand. I should soon start writing my review of the original ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ game soon.

      Hi Xav,

Glad you enjoyed my review on ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’. Glad you enjoyed the movie. I always find Jim Carrey a guilty pleasure whenever I see him in movies. Interesting comparison you made between Jim Carrey in this movie to the Master in ‘The Power of the Doctor’. I would like it if Jim Carrey played the Master in ‘Doctor Who’. Perhaps he should get his own Rapusitin cover song as Robotnik. 😀

I’m not very familiar with the ‘Sonic’ games, though the set-up for the next film with the introduction of a new character from the games is interesting. Thanks for letting me know about ‘The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog’ on YouTube. I still have the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ TV shows and the OVA movie to check out.

I look forward to checking out your future ‘Sonic’ reviews on your blog.

      Many thanks for your comments.

      Tim 🙂
