Quick TV Series Review – ‘Alex Rider’ (Season 2)

SPOILERS ALERT!!!

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

It’s taken me a while, but thankfully, I’ve been able to see all eight episodes of Season 2 of ‘Alex Rider’! I’ve enjoyed Season 2 of ‘Alex Rider’ after watching Season 1 in 2020. I admit, I took a leisurely approach to watching Season 2 compared to Season 1, since I saw that season in one week.

With Season 2, I saw the episode more or less the week after the next. I was still able to enjoy the episodes and maintain the consistency of the plot going on throughout Season 2, thanks to recaps of the previous episode in the following episode. The series is also pretty tension-driven throughout. 🙂

Season 2 of ‘Alex Rider’ is based upon the fourth book of the ‘Alex Rider’ book series by Anthony Horowitz called ‘Eagle Strike’. It’s been a while since I’ve read ‘Eagle Strike’ as well as the other ‘Alex Rider’ books in 2006, but I was able to recall certain elements featured in that book in this TV series.

This includes Sabina Pleasance, Damian Cray, the mentions of Scorpia, etc. I’ve been meaning to re-read the ‘Alex Rider’ books since revisiting the ‘Stormbreaker’ movie and Season 1 of the ‘Alex Rider’ TV series. I pray that I will get a chance to revisit the ‘Alex Rider’ books, since they are gripping reads.

In Season 2 of ‘Alex Rider’, Alex is recovering from the experience he had of being at Point Blanc in Season 1 as well as working for the special division of MI6, run by Alan Blunt. He soon ends up going on holiday in Cornwall with Jack Starbright, the Riders’ housekeeper, and his school friend Tom Harris.

There, he meets Sabina Pleasure, who was a love interest for Alex in the books ‘Skeleton Key’ and ‘Eagle Strike’. After an attempt to assassinate Sabina’s father is made, Alex investigates to find out that Damian Cray is attempting a worldwide disaster via his latest video game ‘Feathered Serpent 2’.

It was fascinating to watch Season 2 of ‘Alex Rider’ and compare it to what I could recall from reading the ‘Alex Rider’ books, including ‘Eagle Strike’ as well as from watching the ‘Stormbreaker’ movie and Season 1 of the TV show. There are familiar aspects of Season 1 reintroduced in Season 2.

It was nice to see most of the cast of Season 1 back for Season 2. Otto Farrant returns as Alex Rider and continues to be very good as the character. There’s also Stephen Dillane as Alan Blunt, and it’s so fascinating how he prevents Alex from being involved in MI6’s operations throughout the season.

Vicky McClure returns as Mrs. Jones, and she’s a centre of moral support for Alex throughout Season 2. Brenock O’Connor returns as Tom Harris, Alex’s best friend as well as Ronke Adékoluẹjo as Jack Starbright. There’s also Ace Bhatti as John Crawley and Nyasha Hatendi as quartermaster Smithers. 🙂

Thomas Levin returns as Yassen Gregorovitch and it’s interesting how it’s unveiled that he knew Alex’s father and was a friend of his, despite him killing Alex’s uncle in Season 1. There’s also Marli Siu as Kyra Vashenko-Chao, who was at Point Blanc with Alex and she helps him out in Season 2. 🙂

Toby Stephens plays Damian Cray, the villain of Season 2. I found him very good as the villain of Season 2 of ‘Alex Rider’. Charithra Chandran plays Sabina Pleasance. I like how Sabina is introduced in Season 2 of ‘Alex Rider’. It seems a shame that the ‘romance’ between her and Alex is short-lived. 😦

There’s also Rakie Ayola as Jo Bryne, the deputy director of the CIA and Gwyneth Keyworth as Evelyn, Damian Cray’s chief programmer. The tone of the ‘Alex Rider’ series does seem to be very serious and grounded in real-life as opposed to some ‘childlike’ aspects in the ‘Stormbreaker’ film. 😐

Season 2 of ‘Alex Rider’ was great to check out on Amazon Prime Video, both on the computer and on the new BT TV my parents and I have. Strangely, my Mum and I watched the first and last episode of Season 2 on the computer whilst we watched the other episodes of Season 2 on the BT TV we got. 😀

The story and the characters were gripping to watch throughout Season 2 of ‘Alex Rider’. I hope we won’t have to wait long for Season 3 of ‘Alex Rider’ to be made. The series seems to be going in that direction, especially since Alex is about to find out more about his family’s background somewhere.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂
