‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – ‘Enlightenment’

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

We come to the end of ‘The Black Guardian Trilogy’ in Season 20 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series, as we look at the third and final story called ‘Enlightenment’. This is a four-part adventure by Barbara Clegg, starring Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, Janet Fielding as Tegan and Mark Strickson as Turlough. As well as Valentine Dyall as the Black Guardian, this story also features the return of Cyril Luckham as the White Guardian. There’s also the introduction of the Eternals, including Keith Barron as Captain Striker and Lynda Baron as Captain Wrack. ‘Enlightenment’ can be checked out on DVD and Britbox. Continue reading

And now we come to the ‘Doctor Who’ story where we say goodbye to Sarah Sutton as Nyssa of Traken, my favourite ‘Doctor Who’ companion. It’s time for the second story of ‘The Black Guardian Trilogy’ in Season 20 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series called ‘Terminus’. This is a four-part story by Stephen Gallagher. As well as Sarah Sutton as Nyssa, this story also features Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, Janet Fielding as Tegan, Mark Strickson as Turlough and Valentine Dyall as the Black Guardian. It’s Spring Bank Holiday Monday in May in the UK today, and it’s time for the first story of ‘The Black Guardian Trilogy’ in Season 20 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series – ‘Mawdryn Undead’. This a four-part story by Peter Grimwade, starring Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, Sarah Sutton as Nyssa and Janet Fielding as Tegan. As well as the return of Valentine Dyall as the Black Guardian, this story also features the return of Nicholas Courtney as the Brigadier. This story also introduces us to new companion Mark Strickson as Vislor Turlough. And there’s David Collings, who guest stars as the titular Mawdryn. ‘Mawdryn Undead’ can be checked out on DVD and Britbox. Continue reading

Today, we check out the second story of Season 20 in the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series. In today’s story, an old foe returns in the form of the Mara, who previously appeared in ‘Kinda’ in Season 19. Janet Fielding becomes possessed by the Mara again, and Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor and Sarah Sutton as Nyssa have to find a way to save her as well as thwart the evil of the Mara about to be unleashed on the planet Manussa. It’s time to begin the second season of Peter Davison’s era as the Fifth Doctor in ‘Doctor Who’ as well as the season celebrating the 20th anniversary of the TV show – Season 20. We begin with ‘Arc of Infinity’, a four-part story by Johnny Byrne where Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor and Sarah Sutton as Nyssa end up on Gallifrey. They contend with the return of Omega from ‘The Three Doctors’ and soon head for Amsterdam on Earth where they reunite with Janet Fielding as Tegan. This story also features Colin Baker (before he became the Sixth Doctor) as Commander Maxil, the head of Time Lord security on Gallifrey. ‘Arc of Infinity’ can be checked out on DVD and Britbox. Season 19 is my favourite season out of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series. It has my favourite TARDIS team, including Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, Sarah Sutton as Nyssa, Janet Fielding as Tegan and Matthew Waterhouse as Adric. Anthony AInley also returns as the Master in two stories of the season. I always enjoy revisiting Season 19 on DVD, Blu-ray and Britbox. 🙂 Continue reading

Here we are on the season finale of Season 19 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series. It’s time to check out ‘Time-Flight’, a four-part story by Peter Grimwade. The story stars Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, Sarah Sutton as Nyssa and Janet Fielding as Tegan. The TARDIS trio help to save a missing Concorde plane by going back in time to the prehistoric age on Earth. Janet Fielding as Tegan also makes her first departure from the series. This ‘Doctor Who’ story is considered one of the worst stories ever made in the entire series. Do I agree with that? ‘Time-Flight’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray or Britbox. Continue reading

This is the first classic TV series ‘Doctor Who’ story that I discovered after checking out the first two seasons of the new ‘Doctor Who’ TV series back in 2006. It’s time for us to check out ‘Earthshock’, a four-part story by Eric Saward. In this story, Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, Sarah Sutton as Nyssa, Janet Fielding as Tegan and Matthew Waterhouse as Adric find themselves tackling against the ‘shocking’ return of the Cybermen. This story also features the departure of Adric as a ‘Doctor Who’ companion. Not all will be plain-sailing in this adventure. 😦 ‘Earthshock’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray or Britbox. Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

It’s time to talk about my absolute favourite ‘Doctor Who’ story in the entire TV series. And yes, I know Peter Davison hates this story, but this is one of Sarah Sutton’s favourite stories, so that’s good for me. 😀 It’s time to check out ‘Black Orchid’, a two-part story by Terence Dudley. Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, Sarah Sutton as Nyssa, Janet Fielding as Tegan and Matthew Waterhouse as Adric visit Cranleigh Hall in 1925. The Doctor gets to play a cricket match and Nyssa, Tegan and Adric partake in a fancy dress ball. The story features guest stars like Michael Cochrane, Moray Watson and Barbara Murray. Sarah Sutton also plays Ann Talbot, a double of Nyssa in the story. ‘Black Orchid’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray or Britbox. Continue reading

We come to one of my favourite stories in Season 19 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series. It’s time for ‘The Visitation’, a four-part story by Eric Saward, where Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, Sarah Sutton as Nyssa, Matthew Waterhouse as Adric and Janet Fielding as Tegan visit England in the year 1666. They meet Michael Robbins (of ‘On the Buses’ fame) as Richard Mace, and they work together to thwart the evil plans of the reptile-like Terileptils, who have come to cause trouble with the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London. ‘The Visitation’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray or Britbox.
