In this episode, the ‘Dad’s Army’ team are chosen to provide the guard of honour for a French general visiting Walmington-on-Sea. Captain Mainwaring also gets a Rolls-Royce from Lady Maltby, which he hopes to use as his staff car. Things go awry when the Mayor’s car gets taken away as well.

It was nice to see Mavis Pugh guest star as Lady Maltby in this ‘Dad’s Army’ episode. I’ve seen Mavis Pugh before in the ‘Fawlty Towers’ episode ‘The Kipper and the Corpse’ where she played Mrs. Chase. She would later star in the Jimmy Perry and David Croft BBC sitcom called ‘You Rang M’Lord’.

It was very funny to see Lady Maltby and Sergeant Wilson reunite with each other after such a long time. And it’s right before Captain Mainwaring in his office. It’s clear that Lady Maltby and Wilson are well acquainted and Mainwaring becomes jealous. She also seems to know Mr. Jones in the episode.

I thought it was very generous of Lady Maltby to offer her Rolls-Royce car to Mainwaring in the episode. Bill Pertwee as Chief Warden Hodges isn’t too pleased since Lady Maltby had first offered the Rolls-Royce to him first. But Lady Maltby clearly finds Hodges ‘awfully common’ as Mainwaring does.

In the episode, the Rolls-Royce car gets a make-over since Mainwaring decides to have it camouflaged for the war effort. It gets painted over with army paint. It was funny when Jonsey and the other platoon members mistake the Mayor’s car for Lady Maltby’s and it gets sprayed with army paint too.

Mainwaring ends up with two cars. It was funny when the Mayor’s car with army paint arrives seconds after Lady Maltby’s car with army paint arrived. Eric Longworth as Mr. Gordon phones up Mainwaring to ask for help from him and his men, not realising that they’ve got the Mayor’s car already.

The episode also features Frank Williams as the Vicar and Edward Sinclair as the Verger. There’s also John Hart Dyke as the French General. Wilson has to give a short speech in French to the French General. There is also Robert Raglan as the Colonel and Fred McNaughton as the Mayor in the episode.

‘The Captain’s Car’ is an episode that I remember fondly from watching on a ‘Dad’s Army’ VHS when I was young. The last scenes where the ‘Dad’s Army’ team provide the guard of honour were equally funny. The French General eventually gives some people, including Mr. Mainwaring, a French kiss. 😀

‘The Captain’s Car’ was the twenty-third episode in Series 3 of the ‘Dad’s Army’ radio series. I enjoyed this radio adaptation of the TV episode. There are some good things about it as well as some not good things about it. As always, certain changes were made in the adaptation process from TV into radio here.

Larry Martyn plays Walker in the radio version of this episode. This is a good thing as Walker wasn’t in the TV version of ‘The Captain’s Car’. Walker was replaced by Private Cheeseman due to James Beck’s tragic death. It was intriguing to hear this episode and find out what it would be like with Walker appearing in it.

Bill Pertwee reprises his role as Chief Warden Hodges in the episode. Certain other characters don’t appear from the TV episode into the radio episode such as the Vicar and the Verger. Therefore certain scenes and dialogue with them are cut out. The Town Clerk and the Mayor are mentioned but don’t speak in this.

Betty Marsden guest stars as Lady Maltby in the radio episode instead of Mavis Pugh as on TV. Meaning no disrespect to Betty Marsden, but I prefer Mavis Pugh’s version of Lady Maltby. Mavis Pugh was subtler and softer as Lady Maltby for TV whereas Betty Marsden slightly overplays it for the radio.

Gerard Green plays the Colonel in the radio episode instead of Robert Raglan as on TV. Gerard Green also plays the French General in the radio episode instead of John Hart Dyke as on TV. It was funny how the scene where Mainwaring gets a French kiss by the French General gets played out in the story.

Because the Town Clerk doesn’t appear or speak in the radio episode, the two scenes outside and inside Mainwaring’s office concerning the Mayor’s car getting army paint sprayed all over it get reduced into one scene outside. There’s no phone conversation between Mainwaring and the Town Clerk here.

Godfrey is the one who relays the information to Mainwaring about what the Town Clerk wants from him and his men in finding the lost Mayor’s car. Another difference in the radio episode is that Frazer drives in a car that’s still got army paint sprayed all over it in order to be used for the French General’s ceremony.

This helps to build up the climax in the radio episode compared to the TV episode. Mainwaring assumed Frazer didn’t spray the Mayor’s car black in time. But in reality, Frazer did spray the Mayor’s car black but it didn’t dry up in time for the ceremony. They use Mainwaring’s new staff car instead. And it gets car crashed! 😀

‘The Captain’s Car’ (Audio) rating – 8/10
