In this episode, Captain Mainwaring has to share his headquarters with Chief Warden Hodges. With Mainwaring and his men unhappy about sharing the church hall with the wardens, they soon have to work together in order to put out a chimney on fire. Will this all end with disastrous consequences?

I enjoyed the opening scenes where Mainwaring is showing his ‘Dad’s Army’ team how to use wireless sets made out of cocoa tins and treacle tins, connected by lengths of string. Some of the dialogue between the characters is so funny, especially when saying “Hello all stations, Charlie One!”

This episode also shows how Mainwaring and Hodges work together and they don’t get on with each other…at all! Hodges becomes insufferable towards Mainwaring, even when they both use the church hall’s office and the telephone at the same time. It was funny when Mrs. Mainwaring phoned in.

The scenes where the ‘Dad’s Army’ team and the Wardens try to put the fire out in the chimney was funny. Jonesy had comedic moments when he’s almost falling out of the window and from the roof to be saved by Mainwaring. He’s extremely grateful to him. I laughed when Pike got drenched with water.

The episode features Bill Pertwee as Chief Warden Hodges; Frank Williams as the Vicar and Edward Sinclair as the Verger. All three become a nuisance to Captain Mainwaring, especially when the Vicar and the Verger seem to be supportive of Hodges since they disregard Mainwaring and the Home Guard.

There’s also Rose Hill as Mrs. Cole, who I believe is the only female Warden in Hodges’ lot in Walmington-on-Sea. How come the ‘Dad’s Army’ team never had a female member of the Home Guard…oh wait! ‘Mum’s Army’! This episode also features Don Estelle as Gerald, another of Hodges’ wardens.

I thought it was rather forceful of Don Estelle’s character to start shoving Mainwaring about. It was amusing when Frazer told the story to everyone about one of his friends getting a curse from a witch doctor once. It was also amusing when the Wardens and the Home Guard competed for the church hall.

‘Uninvited Guests’ is a very amusing episode of ‘Dad’s Army’. I remember seeing this on a VHS lent to us by a friend of the family. It highlights how the ‘Dad’s Army’ team and Hodges’ lot work together and contrast with each other. Hodges is annoying even when the ‘Dad’s Army’ team try to cooperate.

‘Uninvited Guests’ (TV) rating – 9/10

‘Uninvited Guests’ is the seventh episode transmitted in Series 2 of the ‘Dad’s Army’ radio series. It’s a fairly good audio adaptation of the TV episode, although there are certain memorable scenes omitted in the radio version from TV. Once again, Walker does not appear in this radio episode at all.

A notable difference between the TV and radio versions of ‘Uninvited Guests’ is the omission of Mainwaring and his men testing out their new communication system with cocoa tins and treacle tins as well as string. Not certain why those scenes weren’t in the radio version of ‘Uninvited Guests’.

However I do know the cocoa and treacle tins communication scenes were transferred into the radio version of ‘Man Hunt’ called ‘The Great White Hunter’ in Series 3 of the ‘Dad’s Army’ radio series. Once again, I don’t know why the choice was made to put those scenes in the radio version of that episode.

So the radio version of ‘Uninvited Guests’ begins with Mainwaring and Hodges confronting each other in the church hall office and Hodges telling Mainwaring they have to share headquarters. The transition into the Vicar, the Verger and Hodges coming in to confront Mainwaring is almost immediate.

Because of Walker’s absence in the radio version of the TV episode, a lot of lines meant for Walker are given to other characters. Notable examples are when Wilson talks about how ‘common’ Hodges is and being uncooperative instead of Walker saying it. He also says he knows Hodges does do his job.

Frazer is the one who passes the ladder over to Mainwaring when he and the others try to get to the rooftop where the chimney is on fire by passing over a gap where a sheer drop is. It was funny when Godfrey reacted to the word ‘water’ being repeated and he and Wilson had to get buckets of water.

Bill Pertwee, Frank Williams and Edward Sinclair reprise their roles of Chief Warden Hodges; the Vicar and the Verger in the radio version of the episode as they did in the TV version. There’s no Rose Hill as Mrs. Cole and no Don Estelle as Gerald in the radio episode as Hodges says most of their dialogue.

The radio version doesn’t end with Mainwaring; Hodges and some ‘Dad’s Army’ platoon members stuck on the rooftop just when a thunderstorm starts. It also doesn’t end with Mainwaring asking Wilson to call for the Fire Brigade. It finishes with Wilson telling Mainwaring he put the fire out with ‘some salt on it’.

‘Uninvited Guests’ (Audio) rating – 8/10
