‘The Hotel Inspectors’ (TV)

Please feel free to comment on my review.

This is a ‘Fawlty Towers’ episode where Basil is at his snobbish worst. When Sybil tells him that there are some hotel inspectors in town, Basil becomes panic-stricken. He eventually assumes that Mr. Hutchinson, one of the hotel guests, is a hotel inspector and starts to treat and pamper him at lunch.

Bernard Cribbins guest stars as Mr. Hutchinson in the episode. This was the first time I saw Bernard Cribbins in anything before I saw him in ‘Doctor Who’. It’s amazing that as well as ‘Fawlty Towers’, he starred in ‘Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.’ and he would later play Wilfred Mott in ‘Doctor Who’.

I’ve also met Bernard in real-life at the ‘Cardiff Film and Comic Con’ in March 2014 and I’ve had a photo with him and Jacqueline King at the ‘London Comic Con Spring’ in March 2019. Bernard is marvellous and funny as Mr. Hutchinson in this episode and he interacts well with John Cleese here.

There’s also James Cossins as Mr. Walt in the episode. Mr. Walt is very funny in the episode, especially when he gets moved about from table to table by Manuel and Basil during lunch. I also liked that scene where he informed Basil his wine has been corked. 🙂 He also sells outboard motors.

In the episode, I enjoyed it when Basil discovers from Sybil that Mr. Hutchison specialises in spoons. Basil becomes abusive to Mr. Hutchinson, spitting “SPOONS!!!” in his face. He also deals with Mr Hutchison’s main course during lunch as they keep mixing it up. Hutchison gets annoyed about that.

Originally, Hutchinson ordered a Spanish omelette for lunch before he changed his mind and decided to have a cheese salad instead. It was funny when Hutchinson went “OH NO, NO!!!” when they get the order wrong. Basil soon has Hutchinson choking in order to stop him from complaining.

Afterwards, Hutchinson punches Basil behind reception, much to Walt’s shock and horror. It was funny when Hutchinson said “I’m not a violent man, Mr. Fawlty!” after punching him a number of times. It was also funny when Basil met the real hotel inspectors by the story’s end and screamed. 🙂

‘The Hotel Inspectors’ is a very entertaining ‘Fawlty Towers’ episode that portrays Basil’s snobbishness well. It was funny when Basil kept switching from Hutchinson and Walt, believing them to be the hotel inspectors before he gets it absolutely wrong. It portrays him as a really terrible man.

On Disc 1 of the ‘Fawlty Towers – The Complete Collection Remastered’ DVD, there are two audio commentaries on ‘The Hotel Inspectors’. There’s an audio commentary with producer/director John Howard Davies and there’s an audio commentary with John Cleese.

‘The Hotel Inspectors’ rating – 8/10
