‘KIDNAPPED IN THE KHYBER’

Please feel free to comment on my review.

Like in Series 3 where there was a two-linked episode story with ‘Mind My Maharajah’ and ‘Bang Goes the Maharajah’, here we have another two-linked episode story in Series 4, starting off with ‘Kidnapped in the Khyber’. Another Jimmy Perry and David Croft show ‘Hi-de-Hi!’ also has two-parters. 🙂

In ‘Kidnapped in the Khyber’, Colonel Reynolds is reunited with Mrs. Waddilove-Evans, who he’s having an affair with. Interestingly, Mrs. Waddilove-Evans isn’t played by Margaret Courtenay as in the Series 2 episode ‘Forbidden Fruits’. Instead, she’s played by an actress named Frances Bennett. 🙂

I’m surprised Mrs. Waddilove-Evans’ Chinese maid Ling Soo didn’t appear in the episode. Then again, the Sgt-Major’s relationship with Ling Soo didn’t end so smoothly, as he wasn’t willing to sacrifice his military career for her in ‘Pale Hands I Love’. I would like to have seen a resolution to that arc though.

Mind you, Mrs. Waddilove-Evans didn’t appear in Ling Soo’s episode either, so it probably makes sense for Ling Soo to not be in this one. Anyway, it becomes difficult for Colonel Reynolds to hide his affair with Mrs. Waddilove-Evans, as he decides to join the Concert Party to the North-West Frontier.

That’s him, Captain Ashwood, the Sgt-Major and Mrs. Waddilove-Evans joining the Concert Party, as they’re going to perform a show on the North-West Frontier, near the Khyber Pass. It was funny how the Concert Party helped to keep Mrs. Waddilove-Evans stable from motion-sickness on their truck. 😀

Lofty stood in front of Mrs. Waddilove-Evans whilst helping out. 😀 On their journey, the Concert Party come across Pathan tribesmen, led by Soltan Lalani as their chief, who attempt to sell them some pornography. 😮 The Concert Party led by Colonel Reynolds confiscate the said pornography. 😮

The Pathans become angry and soon the Concert Party end up hiding in an old fort away from the tribesmen. Unfortunately, it’s noticed that Daphne has been kidnapped and a sack is thrown over the wall to land at the men’s feet. The Concert Party wonder whether the sack has Daphne’s head in it.

A funny moment I found in this episode is when Colonel Reynolds thinks he’s talking to Daphne with a cloak over her head whereas in fact, it’s actually the Sgt-Major. 😀 It’s so funny how it builds up to the Sgt-Major speaking to the Colonel. It’s also funny when Rangi Ram tells us to tune in next week.

‘Kidnapped in the Khyber’ rating – 8/10
