‘THE ART EXHIBITION’

Please feel free to comment on my review.

In this episode, Hyacinth is about to go off to an art expedition with Richard accompanying her. But her plans are ruined once her Daddy decides to go off to join the French foreign legion. Hyacinth is determined to get Daddy back. She and Richard head off in their car to ‘head for France’ to find him.

Now from this episode’s title, there is the promise of Hyacinth actually going to the art expedition. It would have been intriguing to see how Hyacinth behaved during an art expedition. But sadly this episode isn’t about that as it focuses on the story of Daddy joining the French foreign legion instead.

It’s like the ‘Violet’s Country Cottage’ episode where the promise of a barbeque happening in the episode doesn’t happen. I don’t know why the writer Roy Clarke couldn’t deliver the promise of what was in the episode’s title where we get to see Hyacinth and Richard attend an art exhibition. 😦

There are some good things to take away from this episode. First of all, Rose has a new boyfriend – Nicholas Bennett as Mr. Finchley. Mind you, there is an old fashioned sense about the boyfriends Rose has in the series. Apart from Boris, Rose doesn’t call her boyfriends by their Christian names. 😐

Anyway, the funny part about Rose’s relationship with her new boyfriend is when they both go off to find Daddy. They use Mr. Finchley’s van, but the sound speakers accidentally get switched on. Rose and Finchley’s romantic endeavours are overheard without them realising it, which is quite amusing.

Eventually, Hyacinth finds Daddy waiting outside the house of Mrs. Clayton, holding a sign saying “If you love me, let me know”. It was so funny when Hyacinth and Richard drive Daddy back home in their car to Onslow’s house. People see the sign and they do ‘let’ Hyacinth know that they ‘love’ her. 🙂

In this episode, it gets revealed that Hyacinth is a prude when she becomes embarrassed by seeing art pictures of nudes in a book that Richard is reading. It was amusing and annoying when Richard suggests going to find Daddy at Mrs. Clayton’s and Hyacinth ignores him before suggesting it herself.

The episode also features Jeremy Gittins as the Vicar, who attends the same art exhibition as Hyacinth and Richard. It’s peculiar his wife wasn’t with him! I didn’t like the hat that Hyacinth wore at the end. 😀 I also thought Elizabeth and Emmet were meant to attend. I didn’t spot them attending. 😀

‘The Art Exhibition’ rating – 7/10
