‘Keeping Up Appearances’, Series 1, Episode 1 (TV)

keeping up appearances series 1&2

SERIES 1, EPISODE 1

Please feel free to comment on my review.

The first episode of ‘Keeping Up Appearances’ is a good introduction to Hyacinth Bucket, who is clearly snobbish from the start. In the episode, Hyacinth is informed that her daddy had an accident in the canal where he was cycling stark-naked on his bike. Hyacinth soon pays a visit to the hospital.

It was funny when Hyacinth visits her family to find out what happened to her daddy on that night. The episode gives us a good introduction to Onslow, Daisy and Rose, who are Hyacinth’s rough end of the family. Hyacinth is embarrassed by them and their poor living in the slums of a council estate.

Onslow is my favourite character out of ‘Keeping Up Appearances’ and is well-performed by Geoffrey Hughes (who is also well-known in ‘Coronation Street’). In the first series of ‘Keeping Up Appearances’, Rose is played by Shirley Stelfox, who is extremly good as this flirty sister of Hyacinth’s.

At the hospital, Hyacinth gets to see the extent of her daddy’s injuries. It shocks her when she sees them, but she’s able to see Elizabeth for afternoon coffee at 3.25 at her house. It was funny seeing Lizzie being all nerves when handling Hyacinth’s best china and it is to be a running joke in the series.

The episode also features Peter Cellier who makes his first appearance as the Major in the series. The Major takes a fancy to Hyacinth and makes love to her which was amusing to see. This episode is a really good introduction to the characters in the series and I looked forward to see more of them.

‘Series 1, Episode 1’ rating – 7/10
