Monarch of the Glen

Welcome to the ‘Monarch of the Glen’ page on ‘Bradley’s Basement’.

This is a great BBC comedy-drama TV series made in Scotland! ‘Monarch of the Glen’ is a fantastic series that tells the story of a young laird of the Scottish Highlands who takes his rightful place of an estate in a modern setting. It’s a TV drama series that’s lasted for seven seasons from 2000 to 2005.

‘Monarch of the Glen’ features a superb cast with the likes of Richard Briers, Susan Hampshire, Alistair Mackenzie, Lloyd Owen, Dawn Steele, Hamish Clark, Alexander Morton and Julian Fellowes. It also stars, would you believe it, Tom Baker (from ‘Doctor Who’), in the sixth and seventh seasons.

My Dad purchased the individual DVDs when the series was out in the early 2000s. We now have the complete ‘Monarch of the Glen’ series in a lavish DVD box set. My family and I enjoy this TV drama series. I highly recommend it to those who love light-hearted drama and are interested in Scotland.

I highly recommend going to Scotland for a holiday. There’s plenty to see, including seeing ‘The Monarch of the Glen Country’ in Badenoch and Strathspey that I’ve been lucky to enjoy seeing with my parents on a holiday in 2003.

I got hooked into this TV series since Richard Briers was in it and I enjoyed seeing him in ‘The Good Life’ and ‘Ever Decreasing Circles’. But it’s Alistair Mackenzie as Archie who is the star of the show for me, as he plays the lead character in the first five seasons of the ‘Monarch of the Glen’ TV series.

The DVD box-set has two volumes with 22 discs in total. Volume 1 features Series 1 to 4 (what I call ‘The Archie MacDonald Era’) and Volume 2 features Series 5 to 7 (what I call ‘The Paul Bowman Era’). ‘The Archie MacDonald Era’ was my era of ‘Monarch of the Glen’ and is my favourite.

Here is a list of my DVD reviews of the ‘Monarch of the Glen’. I also hope to add my review on the original ‘The Monarch of the Glen’ novel by Sir Compton Mackenzie. Click on the links below to see and read my reviews.

Enjoy! 🙂
