‘Day of the Dumpster’ (MMPR) (TV)

Please feel free to comment on my review.

I first saw ‘Day of the Dumpster’ when my best mate Stephen lent me a VHS with the first two ‘Power Rangers’ episodes on it. I was into ‘Power Rangers’ as a kid through ‘Turbo’, ‘In Space’, ‘Lost Galaxy’ and ‘Lightspeed Rescue’. So it was exciting for me to watch the first episode and see how it all began.

‘Day of the Dumpster’ sees the evil Rita Repulsa and her minions released from her space dumpster on the moon close to Earth. Rita sets her sights on conquering Earth and very soon the wizard-like Zordon and his robot buddy Alpha 5 summon five teens from Angel Grove to be the Power Rangers.

This first episode of ‘Power Rangers’ moves at a fast pace in setting up the villains, heroes and the overall plot of the series. My gut feeling about this episode says that this should have been a two-parter in order to allow us time to appreciate the characters as well as the first action scenes in this.

The five teens are Austin St. John as Jason, the Red Ranger; Thuy Trang as Trini, the Yellow Ranger; Walter Jones as Zack, the Black Ranger; Amy Jo Johnson as Kimberly, the Pink Ranger and David Yost as Billy, the Blue Ranger. Despite it being a fast first episode, the five teens are well introduced here.

The episode also introduces Paul Schrier as Bulk and Jason Narvy as Skull, the two bullies at school who are like the Laurel & Hardy of ‘Power Rangers’. They provide the comic relief of ‘Power Rangers’, especially with their goofy antics and when they fail miserably with bullying the five teens.

The scenes where the teens become actual Power Rangers were too quick for my liking. They fight the Putty Patrollers in less than 10 seconds before summoning their Dinozords to fight against Goldar, Rita’s second in command. The Megazord fights with giant monsters happen a lot in the series.

The five Dinozords are as follows. Jason/Red has the Tyrannosaurus Dinozord; Trini/Yellow has the Sabretooth Tiger Dinozord; Zach/Black has the Mastodon Dinozord; Kimberly/Pink has the Pterodactyl Dinozord and Billy/Blue has the Triceratops Dinozord. All form to be the Dino Megazord!

I have an issue regarding the fight between the Dino Megazord and Goldar. In the fight, Goldar seems to have the upper hand. But when Jason/Red calls for the Megazord’s Power Sword to fight against him, Goldar retreats in an instant. What?! How come he retreats?! Goldar was winning! The Rangers didn’t have a chance to use the Megazord’s Power Sword in the fight. That was ‘mega’ stupid!

‘Day of the Dumpster’ is a fairly good beginning to the ‘Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers’ series. It’s not a great start, but things would get better later on. It was good to see how the episode introduces the regular characters and sets up the fight between the Power Rangers and Rita Repulsa’s gang.

‘Day of the Dumpster’ (MMPR) rating – 7/10
