‘The Spit Flower’ (MMPR) (TV)

Please feel free to comment on my review.

This episode has Kimberly building a float for the Angel Grove parade. This float apparently contains flowers on it. Tommy helps Kimberly with her float when they’re at the Angel Grove Youth Center. Bulk and Skull come in to cause, but they’re allergic to Kimberly’s flowers when in contact with them.

Well, at least those two bullies didn’t smash up and destroy Kimberly’s float for a change. But that doesn’t stop Rita Repulsa when she sends down her Putties to destroy the float. Kimberly and Tommy fight them off, but the Putties do destroy the model and Kimberly gets so distraught on this.

Now I have to admit, that is very cruel on Rita’s part. It demonstrates how evil she is as a ‘Power Rangers’ villain, especially when she seems to despise beautiful flowers. I wonder why that is as it’s not fully explored. It would have been interesting to learn more than have Rita simply hate flowers.

After this, Rita sends in her new monster called the Spit Flower. This creature can drain people of their energy but taking flowers in its mouth and spitting them out to become ferocious. No seriously. After they’re spat out, the flowers have vicious teeth. I have to tell, that is pretty frightening to see.

The Rangers find it a challenge to defeat the Spit Flower, as its ferocious flowers weaken them. Even in giant mode, the Rangers find it tough to defeat the monster when merging the Green Dragonzord with the Mastodon, the Triceratops and Sabre-Toothed Tiger Dinozords to be the Dragon Megazord.

Fortunately Zordon helps the Rangers to find a weak spot, as Kimberly uses her Power Bow to defeat the Spit Flower. This is also before the Rangers combine their weapons to form the Power Blaster to defeat him. At the episode’s climax, Tommy repairs Kimberly’s float for the parade with Alpha’s help.

Now this is where Tommy’s friendship with Kimberly is strengthened before it develops into a romance. I like how Kimberly sees the float used in the Angel Grove Parade and thanks Tommy for it. It was also funny when Zack scares off Bulk and Skull with a bouquet of flowers at the conclusion.
