‘THE WANNA-BE RANGER’ (MMPR)
Please feel free to comment on my review.
This ‘Power Rangers’ episode has a balance of being really good as well as pretty absurd at the same time! The episode begins with our Ranger teens minus Zack playing a game of basketball. Zack turns up in a monster costume that looks like the Mugato from the ‘Star Trek’ episode, ‘A Private Little War’.
The Rangers are then alerted by Zordon to teleport to the Command Center. They teleport over there where Zordon tells the Rangers he needs to temporarily de-energise. Alpha is left in charge and to tell the Rangers of anything that should occur within Angel Grove. The Rangers agree to this arrangement.
After a while, Alpha feels bored and left alone in the Command Center. He then sees a little boy named Dylan who’s looking for his mom in the park. Alpha considers contacting the Rangers, but decides to help the boy himself. So he teleports out of the Command Center and calls himself…the Alpha Ranger!
Upon arrival in the park, Alpha somehow manages to scare Bulk and Skull away with his sudden appearance. Which is a bit odd, considering they should know who Alpha is and what he looks like in ‘Life’s A Masquerade’. In fact, why are they scared of Alpha? He’s only a friendly neighbourhood robot. 😀
Anyway Alpha finds Dylan and agrees to help him find his mother as well as befriending him and about to play soccer with him. This is before Lord Zedd’s new monster called Primator turns up and disguises himself as an evil Billy. Alpha sees through the evil Billy disguise just as Primator attacks the little robot.
Alpha then activates his self-destruct sequence so that Primator can’t use him to find the Command Center. Very soon, the Rangers fight against Primator and overcome his disguise techniques by using a mirror as a reflective surface to expose him. The Rangers soon fight a giant Primator with Megazords.
It’s interesting to see the Megazord fight as the original five teens used their new Thunderzords to become the Thunder Megazord and Tommy uses the Dragonzord. Um, I thought Tommy couldn’t use the Dragonzord anymore. We also do not get to see the Thunder Megazord and Dragonzord together.
I like how the episode ends with Alpha being reasonably scolded by Zordon for leaving the Command Center unprotected and failing to inform the Rangers about Dylan the little boy and Primator. Alpha has to learn responsibility and seems to be grounded in the Command Center, which he despairs over.
‘The Wanna-Be Ranger’ (MMPR) rating – 8/10
