The Mystery of the Lost Son For Gwen

This is a touching and moving ‘Torchwood’ episode by Chris Chibnall. It’s a story about a parent who loses her son and Gwen gets involved in the investigation of trying to find him. It doesn’t go really well.

This is a Gwen story as we get to explore more of her character and she tries to re-find the caring side she feels she’s lost since joining Torchwood. This is a story where Gwen challenges Torchwood’s ideals.

She wants to help those who have lost their loved ones. Jack tells her to ‘close this down’, but Gwen goes to great lengths to find Nikki’s missing son Jonah. There’s an emotional complexity to this episode.

This episode features the return of Tom Price as PC Andy Davidson. Andy is a former colleague of Gwen’s from the Cardiff police force. He was in the first ‘Torchwood’ TV episode ‘Everything Changes’.

Andy gets played for comic relief in ‘Torchwood’, though he was the one who called Gwen to help him with this investigation. Andy still fancies Gwen and was afraid to come to her wedding because of that.

The episode features special guest star Ruth Jones (of ‘Gavin and Stacey’ fame) as Nikki Bevan, the mother who lost her son. There’s also Robert Pugh as Jonah, Gwen’s lost son who is on this tiny island.

Jonah has aged with scars and can utter horrible primal screams. And I’ve just realised that Robert Pugh would later go on to be in the ‘Doctor Who’ story ‘The Hungry Earth’/’Cold Blood’ with Matt Smith.

I was delighted to see the Cardiff Barrage in the episode. I’ve walked on that barrage quite a number of times as a link from Cardiff to Penarth when I’m meeting up with my best mate Stephen from school.

The DVD special features on this episode in ‘The Complete Series 2’ of ‘Torchwood’ are as follows. On Disc 5, there’s the ‘Torchwood Declassified’ episode ‘Quid Pro Quo’.
