Owen’s Not Dead But He’s Not Alive Either
What?! Yeah! Owen’s back and he’s not dead! Well okay, he is dead at the beginning. But Jack brings him back to life. Yet Owen’s not alive. He’s a walking dead man. A walking dead corpse! (Pause) What?!
This was something I didn’t really understand when I watched ‘Dead Man Walking’, the seventh episode of Series 2 in ‘Torchwood’. It rather unsettled me when I watched it, but it was pretty gripping.
This episode is by Matt Jones, who wrote the two-part ‘Doctor Who’ story ‘The Impossible Planet’/’The Satan Pit’. This is a pretty dark story featuring the theme of death as ‘death’ is the main monster/villain.
It also features a lot of Weevils who have become the recurring monsters in the ‘Torchwood’ series. Owen gets to be ‘king of the Weevils’ since he’s dead and speaks some kind of alien/devilish language.
He also looks like a Thunderbird puppet according to John Barrowman in the ‘Torchwood Declassified’ episode for this story. I found that funny when watching the behind-the-scenes making of this episode.
This story also features the return of the resurrection glove, a device used by the Torchwood team in ‘Everything Changes’ and ‘They Keep Killing Suzie’. This is really the second of that pair of magic gloves.
Ianto hinted about this in the previous season and the one that Jack uses to bring Owen back to life is the second of that pair. Martha is very annoyed with Jack that she never told her or U.N.I.T about this.
Poor Martha Jones gets picked upon by that resurrection glove when it attacks her and she ages horribly to death. I found that pretty frightening and horrifying to watch, though the make-up is good.
There’s this scene where Owen has to get a drink of alcohol out of his body when he’s in a police cell with Jack. That moment freaked me out when I saw it! I recall that scene vividly when seeing it on TV.
I agree with Jack. It’s ‘the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen! And I know disgusting!’ I do like the scenes Jack and Owen share in the tale, especially when Jack tells Owen why he didn’t give up on him.
The DVD special features on this episode in ‘The Complete Series 2’ of ‘Torchwood’ are as follows. On Disc 5, there’s the ‘Torchwood Declassified’ episode ‘Death Defying’.
‘Dead Man Walking’ (TW) rating – 8/10
