Old Cinema Film Characters To Scare You
This is a pretty eerie, disturbing and atmospheric ‘Torchwood’ episode. It’s one I enjoyed watching and is by Peter J. Hammond who previously penned the ‘Torchwood’ TV episode called ‘Small Worlds’.
Peter J. Hammond also contributed the ‘Doctor Who’ story called ‘Paradise 5’ which has been adapted into a Big Finish audio drama with Colin Baker. I recall this episode vividly when watching it on the TV.
The episode is about two characters from an old cinema film who step out into the shadows. They are the Ghost Maker and Pearl and they’re two Night Travellers that once performed at a travelling circus.
The Ghost Maker and Pearl haunt the streets of Cardiff and kill people by taking their last breaths, putting them in a flask. The Torchwood team must use new unfamiliar methods to tackle this menace.
I like the 1920s scene at the beginning of the episode with the travelling circus that was filmed in Cardiff Bute Park somewhere. It brings a nostalgic sense of history into the story as well as an eeriness.
It sets up what is about to occur in the final outcome of this story. This is an episode where you don’t quite fully understand what’s going on and some of the imagery is pretty terrifying as well as the music.
Julian Bleach guest stars as the Ghost Maker, dressed up like a creepy circus ringmaster. He would go on to play Davros in the new ‘Doctor Who’ series, first with ‘The Stolen Earth’/’Journey’s End’ in 2008.
There’s also the lovely, beautiful Camilla Power as Pearl, who gets disturbingly giddily happy when she and the Ghost Maker take someone’s breath away. I found her irresistible and scary at the same time.
Camilla once worked with Tom Baker in the BBC TV version of ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair’. She’s also done a number of Big Finish audios adventure in ‘Doctor Who’ which is really amazing.
The DVD special features on this episode in ‘The Complete Series 2’ of ‘Torchwood’ are as follows. On Disc 5, there’s the ‘Torchwood Declassified’ episode ‘In Living Colour’.
‘From Out of the Rain’ (TW) rating – 8/10
