It Had To Be A Big Space Whale
The fourth ‘Torchwood’ episode of Series 2 called ‘Meat’ is by Catherine Tregenna. She previously wrote two episodes for Series 1 of ‘Torchwood’. These were ‘Out of Time’ and ‘Captain Jack Harkness’.
This is a really good ‘Torchwood’ episode as it features a giant space whale. Of course it does! 😀 It’s also where Kai Owen as Rhys Williams discovers his girlfriend Gwen has been working for Torchwood.
I like Rhys’ character in ‘Torchwood’. He’s played brilliantly by Kai Owen. In Series 1, Rhys had no idea Gwen was working for Torchwood. Now he learns the truth and he wants no more secrets from Gwen.
In the episode, Rhys get notified of a lorry accident. The lorry belongs to his haulage company called Harwood’s. Witnessing Gwen with the Torchwood team investigating the incident, Rhys gets involved.
He follows Gwen before he’s discovered by her and then helps to solving the mystery of what’s going on in the episode. It transpires that alien meat has been sold to the public. That’s pretty grizzly indeed!
It soon becomes personal and dangerous. Rhys has to help the Torchwood team discover the giant space whale in a warehouse and find the people responsible for cutting it open and selling meat from it.
I found Gwen and Rhys’ relationship strongly developed in the episode. Gwen has been lying to Rhys for the past year and Rhys gets Gwen to prove to him that she catches aliens for a living in Cardiff city.
That fiery confrontation between them in their flat is very intense. I like how much Rhys loves Gwen and she loves him. She refuses to drug Rhys to forget everything about Torchwood which is so defining.
The DVD special features on this episode in ‘The Complete Series 2’ of ‘Torchwood’ are as follows. On Disc 5, there’s the ‘Torchwood Declassified’ episode ‘Save the Whale’.
