It’s Gwen and Rhys’ Wedding Today
This episode is by Phil Ford, who previously wrote episodes of ‘Coronation Street’. He became head-writer on ‘The Sarah Jane Adventures’ and would co-write ‘The Waters of Mars’ with Russell T. Davies.
This episode I remember well from the series and is one of my favourites with Gwen and Rhys. I chatted to Eve about this episode at the ‘Cardiff Film and Comic Con’ in March 2014. She recalls it well.
Gwen and Rhys are looking forward to their big day. Only one problem though. Gwen is pregnant. Yep! That’s right! Gwen gets impregnated by one of an alien species who are shape-shifters called a Nostrovite.
They can take on human form and devour flesh. Despite this, Gwen is determined to go ahead with the wedding. It’s amazing how Gwen is determined to marry Rhys despite this alien trying to kill them.
Pretty soon, the mother Nostrovite comes along and is out for Gwen. Can Jack and the others save Gwen as well as her and Rhys’ wedding day? Well let’s hope so with all of the family and friends there!
This is a rare instance of ‘Torchwood’ doing a comedy episode in a wedding sense which I enjoyed. There are elements of horror but this is balanced very well by the comedy of identity crisis throughout.
The alien shape-shifter takes on the forms of various people and you don’t know who’s who. I had trouble trying to figure who was who when watching the episode on TV. It was that pretty compelling.
There are two guest stars in the episode that have appeared in ‘Doctor Who’. There’s William Thomas as Geraint, Gwen’s dad. He did ‘Doctor Who’ twice in ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’ and ‘Boom Town’!
There’s also Nerys Hughes as Brenda, Rhys’ mum, who was in the ‘Doctor Who’ story ‘Kinda’. There’s also Sharon Morgan as Mary, Gwen’s mum as well as Robin Griffith as Barry, Rhys’ dad in the episode.
The DVD special features on this episode in ‘The Complete Series 2’ of ‘Torchwood’ are as follows. On Disc 5, there’s the ‘Torchwood Declassified’ episode ‘Something New’.
‘Something Borrowed’ (TW) rating – 8/10
