Clara’s Adventure Inside The TARDIS
This is a fan-pleasing episode by Steve Thompson. It’s about Matt Smith’s Doctor and Jenna Coleman’s Clara in the TARDIS who get abducted by a bunch of space salvage collectors on their spaceship in the deep future.
The TARDIS gets dragged into the spaceship and blows up. Once aboard, the Doctor acquires the services of these traders in order to find and rescue Clara, who is lost somewhere inside the TARDIS.
Once the Doctor and the space traders have found Clara, they have to reach the centre of the TARDIS to prevent it from blowing up. Can they achieve this and avoid monsters getting in the way?!
The space traders are led by Ashley Walters as Gregor van Baalen. I’ve seen Ashley Walters before in the Alex Rider film called ‘Stormbreaker’. So it was nice to see him appear in this ‘Doctor Who’ story.
There are three space traders and they’re all brothers. As well as Gregor van Baalen, there’s also Mark Oliver as Bram van Baalen and Jahvel Hall as Tricky van Baalen, who believe he’s this ‘android’.
This episode allows us to go deeper into parts of the TARDIS that we’ve never been to before. This has been done before in the classic TV series in ‘The Invasion of Time’; ‘Logopolis’ and ‘Castrovalva’.
It’s also been done recently in the story, ‘The Doctor’s Wife’. But this is first time where we actually get to go deeper into the TARDIS ship’s interior. It becomes more central to events during this story.
I liked it when Clara gets to explore various parts of the TARDIS. As well as going down various corridors, Clara gets to see an observatory, a swimming pool and even a library with plenty of books.
There are also echoes of voices from past Doctors and past companions in this episode. This happens when Bram van Baalen begins to break into the TARDIS console and the voices start speaking from it.
The voices heard in that scene are from people like Susan, Ian, the Fifth Doctor, the Third Doctor and even the Ninth Doctor himself. These are moments that I’m sure would be pleasing to the fans’ ears.
In the episode, there are scary-looking time zombies that appear in the TARDIS wherever the Doctor and Clara go. Clara wants to know what these zombies are, but the Doctor doesn’t want to tell her.
I liked it when our heroes get to visit the Eye of Harmony in this episode. This was a place in the TARDIS that has been focused on in ‘The TV Movie’, so it’s nice to see it readdressed in this episode.
There’s a really tense scene between the Doctor and Clara in this episode. It happens when they can’t get into the TARDIS engine room and the Doctor angrily confronts Clara about who she truly is.
The Doctor reveals to Clara that he saw her die twice in the Dalek Asylum and in Victorian London. Clara has no idea what the Doctor is talking about, and it scares her to watch him behave in this way.
Eventually the TARDIS restores to normal, and Clara forgets what the Doctor has revealed to her about meeting her twice and seeing her die. Will the Doctor ever get to know the truth about Clara?
‘Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS’ is a very exciting, fan-pleasing ‘Doctor Who’ episode. It’s quite complicated in certain areas and you really need to keep your eyes and ears open on what it’s about.
The DVD special features on this episode are as follows. On Disc 4 of ‘The Complete Series 7’ of ‘Doctor Who’, there’s the ‘Behind-The-Scenes: Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS’ featurette featuring cast and crew interviews. There’s also the documentary about ‘The Science of Doctor Who’ and there’s the mini-episode, ‘Script to Screen: Good as Gold’ with the Doctor and Amy.
‘Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS’ rating – 7/10
