The Kin with the Eleventh Doctor and Amy
The eleventh story of the ‘Doctor Who’ Puffin e-shorts series is ‘Nothing O’Clock’ by Neil Gaiman. Here’s a YouTube interview with Neil Gaiman.
Neil Gaiman is well-known for writing the ‘Doctor Who’ TV episodes ‘The Doctor’s Wife’ and ‘Nightmare In Silver’, both starring Matt Smith’s Doctor. He’s also written books like ‘Neverwhere’, ‘Stardust’, ‘American Gods’, ‘The Graveyard Book’ and ‘Coraline’. It’s amazing he’s written this story.
‘Nothing O’Clock’ features the Eleventh Doctor and Amy. The story is divided into eight chapters. The audiobook version of this story is read by Peter Kenny, who I don’t know much about. I can’t find any ‘Doctor Who’ connections related to him and I don’t know why he was chosen to read this story.
It’s not that Peter Kenny is a bad reader. On the contrary, he’s very good. I enjoyed his narration for this particular Eleventh Doctor story. I’d just like to know the reason why he was chosen to read this story. I would’ve preferred Karen Gillan to read the story since she played Amy Pond in the TV series.
In the story, the TARDIS returns to Amy’s home in the village of Leadworth. But Amy’s house happens to be deserted as well as for everywhere else in the village. The Doctor and Amy go back in time to the year 1984. They discover the alien Kin, old enemies of the Time Lords, have taken over. 😮
I did find it fascinating that there were these beings called the Kin that got locked up in a prison by the Time Lords. I don’t think it’s the same prison as the one in ‘Shada’, but the story put me in mind of it. I also did enjoy the children’s storybook spookiness of this adventure with the Doctor and Amy.
‘Nothing O’Clock’ rating – 7/10
