‘Nightmare of the Daleks’ (Audio)

Daleks with the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan and Marc

Kayi Ushe, Nicholas Briggs, Ajjaz Awad and Alana Maria in ‘Nightmare of the Daleks’.

‘Nightmare of the Daleks’ is the third and final story of ‘The Lost Resort and Other Stories’ CD box set in ‘Doctor Who’ by Big Finish. This also happens to be George Watkins’ final appearance as Marc.

I’m saddened this is Marc’s final ‘Doctor Who’ story. I’ve enjoyed the journey he’s had with the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan since ‘Tartarus’. I suppose it was inevitable his TARDIS travels would end. 😦

I had hoped Marc would continue to travel further in the TARDIS with the Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan, despite what he’d been through with his cyber-conversion. I imagine that the damage was too much.

I was anxious about what Marc’s fate would be. Whether he would leave the TARDIS on a happy note or whether it would end in tragedy. His departure is somewhat ambiguous in this adventure. 😐

I hope that there’s an opportunity for Marc to return in ‘Doctor Who’. Whether it’d be set after his travels with the Fifth Doctor or whether Big Finish would explore stories during his TARDIS travels. 😐

‘Nightmare of the Daleks’ is a two-part adventure by Martyn Waites, who previously wrote ‘Feast of Fear’ with the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan and Marc. I believe Martyn wrote Marc’s departure well. 🙂

The story takes place within a drilling rig on the planet XB93. The crew have been suffering nightmares where cold metallic creatures are stalking them in the base, killing them in their sleep. 😮

In the TARDIS, Marc inadvertently diverts the ship to the planet XB93 and ends up unconscious. On arrival, the Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan learn more on what’s going on and discover sleeping chambers.

The sleeping chambers did put me in mind of the ones featured in ‘Sleep No More’. The drilling rig crew are forced to have artificial sleep, which is where they have their nightmares about the Daleks.

There’s certainly a political atmosphere about this story concerning a company behind the conditions of the drilling rig and its crew. Not sure if it’s the exact same company behind Terminus. 🙂

I’ve become aware of Martyn Waites’ political influence in this audio story from briefly checking out his Twitter account. It’s intriguing how he incorporates it into the story, delivering a gripping yarn. 🙂

Peter Davison continues to be excellent as the Fifth Doctor. I like his reaction to learning that the Daleks are involved in this matter on the planet XB93. He’s determined to stop their menace again. 🙂

It’s also good how the Doctor handles saying goodbye to Marc, who decides to stay behind in the dream machine. There are senses of closure for the Doctor from the adventures he’s had with Marc.

Sarah Sutton is equally very good as Nyssa in this adventure. I liked Nyssa’s horrified reaction that the Daleks are involved (which I played twice) since she’s met them before in previous audio stories.

She’s also met them in my Fifth Doctor stories like ‘Doom of the Daleks’. I like how Nyssa gets to accompany the Doctor twice in the dream machine since they venture in the nightmarish drilling rig.

Janet Fielding is also very good as Tegan here. Tegan would later meet Daleks in ‘Resurrection of the Daleks’. I wonder if she forgot that she encountered a Dalek once in the audio story called ‘The Elite’.

Tegan is told to stay behind and monitor the Doctor and Nyssa when they go into the nightmare dreamscape with Marc. She does get to join the Doctor, Nyssa and Marc in ‘Part Two’ of the story. 🙂

With George Watkins as Marc, he meets Kayi Ushe as Jez, who’s on the run from the Daleks in the nightmarish world. He forms a bond with Jez and he becomes horrified by the Daleks’ callous killings.

Marc gets angry when he argues Jez’s case and that he has a daughter to Alana Maria as Chelmer. Marc is noble and brave, utilising his cyber-converted body to hold off the Daleks in the dreamscape.

Once again, the Daleks are voiced by Nicholas Briggs. It’s always a thrill to hear the Daleks in a ‘Doctor Who’ audio adventure, as Nick Briggs continues to provide various voices for the pepperpots.

Ajjaz Awad also appears in this audio story as Foster, one of the workers being chased by Daleks. Ajjaz Award previously played Katarina in the ‘Doctor Who’ audio adventure ‘Daughter of the Gods’.

I like how the story concludes with Marc providing voiceover narration, as the Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan leave in the TARDIS. It signifies how much Marc’s friends truly meant to him during his travels.

‘Nightmare of the Daleks’ is a satisfying conclusion to the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan and Marc stories we’ve been getting. It’s sad it’s come to an end, but I’m glad Marc got a well-deserved exit. 🙂

The CD extras are as follows. On Disc 4 of ‘The Lost Resort and Other Stories’ CD box set, there are behind-the-scenes interviews with the cast and crew, including Peter Davison and Sarah Sutton, Janet Fielding and George Watkins, Nicholas Briggs, script editor/producer Scott Handcock, director Samuel Clemens, etc. There’s also a suite of incidental music to enjoy.

‘The Lost Resort and Other Stories’ CD box set of ‘Doctor Who’ has been worthwhile to check out. I’m glad the last three stories of the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan and Marc came out in 2021 after the Big Finish schedule for ‘the monthly adventures’ got hampered by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. 🙂

I don’t know what lies ahead for future Fifth Doctor audio stories by Big Finish, as they seem to be on their way to being released in CD box sets as opposed to single or double-disc CD sets. I’m currently looking forward to checking out the two upcoming ‘Forty’ CD box sets for the Fifth Doctor.

    Great review Tim.

Even though I didn’t enjoy ‘Nightmare of the Daleks’ as much as the other two stories in this box set, it was still good. Marc was great to listen to and I’d say he had a good as well as emotional end to his time as a companion to the Doctor. I did actually find similarities between this and ‘Earthshock’. A major ‘Doctor Who’ monster terrorising a crew and the departure of a companion.

Annoyingly and the reason why I didn’t like this story as much as the other two, another similarity between this and ‘Earthshock’ was the guest cast accusing the Doctor of something wrong before learning to trust him later on. Chelmer was quite unlikeable as was the worker that Tegan chatted to. I was at least glad that Chelmer had a change of heart. She wasn’t as incompetent and unlikable as Lieutenant Scott and Captain Briggs from ‘Earthshock’.

Maybe things will be better for the Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan now that it’s just them for a bit. Even though I liked Marc and think he had a good journey, the section between ‘Conversion’ and ‘The Lost Resort’ could have been much better handled for the rest of the Tardis crew as I felt their character’s had been derailed. I plan on including Marc in a story as part of my Fifth Doctor series in which he meets Michael, as well as Adric and Turlough. Whether that will take place during or after his travels with the Doctor I’ll wait and see.

One day I will re-listen to the entire Marc chapter of the Fifth Doctor journey and review it on my blog which is still being worked on. I hope to get it started this month.

    Take care, WF92.

      Hi Xavier,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on ‘Nightmare of the Daleks’. Glad you enjoyed the review. Interesting you didn’t enjoy this story as much as the previous two. I suppose the ‘Earthshock’ structure in Fifth Doctor era ‘Doctor Who’ stories has been done to death (I’ve even employed it myself in ‘Doom of the Daleks’), but I didn’t mind it so much when I heard the story. I’m glad you enjoyed the Marc chapter of the Fifth Doctor era despite how you feel on how it went from ‘Conversion’ to ‘The Lost Resort’. Interesting thoughts on how you’d like to revisit Marc in your stories. Honestly, I would’ve handled the Marc arc differently compared to how it was handled in the Big Finish audios.

      Many thanks for your comments.

      Tim 🙂
