Starman on Babylon with the Ninth Doctor and Ali
The ninth story of the ‘Doctor Who’ Puffin e-shorts series is ‘The Beast of Babylon’ by Charlie Higson. Here’s a YouTube interview with Charlie Higson.
Charlie Higson is well-known for writing the ‘Young Bond’ and the ‘Enemy’ young adult series of books and has written and starred in ‘The Fast Show’ with Mark Williams and Arabella Weir. He also contributed an introduction to the ‘Doctor Who and the Crusaders’ novelization’s reprinted edition.
‘The Beast of Babylon’ features the Ninth Doctor and it takes place during the final scene of ‘Rose’. The story is divided into twelve chapters. Travelling solo, the Doctor tries to find a new companion. The audiobook version of this story is read by the author Charlie Higson, who does a good reading. 🙂
Mind you, I would’ve liked it if Billie Piper, Camille Coduri or Noel Clarke read the story instead. The story has three settings. It starts off on the planet Karkinos before we go to the planet Earth in Babylon and then in London where the Doctor invites Rose again to join him on his TARDIS travels. 🙂
The Doctor is trying to stop a terrifying being called the Starman. He has a companion for a brief time called Ali who comes from the planet Karkinos and is keen to travel with the Time Lord. I was pretty surprised by how Ali gradually developed and how she’s revealed as a crustacean-like species.
At first, the Doctor’s not keen to travel with Ali. It gets explained that Ali tends to lash out and be aggressive, something that isn’t very common with the Doctor’s companions and he prefers humans. I’m very curious about the Doctor’s previous unseen companions like Prince Ego and Ella McBrien. 😀
‘The Beast of Babylon’ rating – 8/10
