‘THE FIVE DIMENSIONAL MAN’

1950s Housewife with the Second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe
This story is by Kate Orman. It features the Second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe and is read by David Troughton. I found this a fairly enjoyable tale where a housewife meets Zoe in an astronaut suit as she’s in her kitchen in the 1950s. The housewife is named Betty and she happens to own a lot of pets.
It was confusing at first when the story started with a narration by an American voice, I believe. Then it moves onto David Troughton narrating the main part of the story where Betty’s in her house and receives a visitation from Zoe. The transition back to American narration happens a few times in this.
It also takes a while for the Doctor to appear as he and Zoe acquire Betty’s help when they go in the TARDIS to rescue Jamie. Jamie’s held prisoner by the evil Ferdinand Sterling. Ferdinand happens to be this scientist from the 28th century who lived on Planet 801 and controlled the planet’s robots. 😐
The story’s climax was a little baffling. I believe Betty managed to defeat Ferdinand whereas the Doctor, Jamie and Zoe couldn’t. Then Betty found herself back home, with her pets and about to prepare dinner for her husband. No mention is given of her remembering the Doctor, Jamie and Zoe.
David Troughton is a very good reader and does good voices for the Second Doctor, played by Patrick Troughton who was his father, as well as Jamie and Zoe. He also has a good knack of voicing American characters in the story like Betty. It was intriguing how Betty reacted to Zoe in her kitchen.
