Can you explain your placement of the Main Range and New Adventures?

Placing the Main Range 7/Ace(/Hex)(/Mel) audios between Timewyrm: Genesys and Love and War doesn’t make any sense. Ace keeps track of her age meticulously in the novels, and in the audios she has no idea. Her one-off relationships in Nightshade and Love and War would be incredibly out of character if she already had Hex behind her. Her character is also far more mature in the audios compared to the early novels (minus Warhead), at least until BF got a bit inconsistent around some of the last few Hex stories. Using The Prisoner’s Dilemma mindwipe to place the MR audios after the NA books, or even the Timewyrm: Genesys mindwipe to place them before, works a lot better.

This is the order I personally use:

    Season 24 (Mel)
    Season 25 (Ace)
GN: A Cold Day in Hell!
    GN: Nemesis of the Daleks
    Season 26 (Ace)
    Lost Stories (Ace, Raine)
New Adventures (Ace) + GN: Evening’s Empire
    New Adventures (Benny)
New Adventures (Benny, Ace) + GN: Emperor of the Daleks
    New Adventures (Benny, Chris, Roz)
    New Adventures (Chris, Roz)
    New Adventures (Chris)
The Prisoner’s Dilemma (Ace memory wipe)
    Main Range (Ace)
    Main Range (Ace, Hex)
Main Range (Ace, Hex, Sally, Lysandra)
    Main Range (Ace, Hex)
    Main Range (Ace)
    Main Range (Ace, Mel)
Death Comes to Time (Ace undergoes Time Lord training in Gallifrey’s future)

I’d like to point out here that Ace’s memories were uploaded to the Matrix in “Lungbarrow,” so if she were to return to Gallifrey post Main Range, she would be able to regain her New Adventures memories.

    Main Range (Klein)
New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield (Benny)
New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield (Benny, Ace)
    Main Range (Solo)
    Main Range (Klein, Will)

Trying to perfectly reconcile the NAs with Big Finish is a losing battle I’m afraid. BF seems to take the approach that some elements of the NAs are cannon (Benny and the various novel adaptations) while some elements are not (Ace’s characterization, some novels being adapted as solo adventures for Benny in her first season, Human Nature being turned into a 10th Doctor story for TV). I still find that the best approach for making the timeline would be to place the Ace/Hex adventures before Benny.

You know, on second thought, I think I prefer the idea of the Ace/Hex adventures occuring after Lungbarrow. Ace is simply far too mature in the BF Main Range (Harvest onward) to suddenly regress back to her Season 26 persona in the early VNA books. So I approve of that change.

With that said, I think it would be better for the lost Season 27 with Raine and the early Main range stuff (Fearmonger to Rapture) to be moved back into place between the Cat’s Cradle arc. The Timewyrm books should also occur directly after Survival as continuity is pretty tight there (as noted on the DU board).

        Hi elgranto.

I would need to read the NA books to be sure of the placements you’ve suggested.

However, I’ve placed the Timewyrm books directly after ‘Survival’ as you suggested.

I just don’t know anymore. I’ve been going back and forth on this for awhile now. I jumped into Big Finish almost immediately after my first Classic Who watch-through, so I assumed the 7/Ace Main Range audios took place soon after ‘Survival.’ After meeting Benny in ‘The Shadow of the Scourge,’ I learned about the New Adventures novels, and assumed they took place even later in the timeline. This was further supported by the Doctor’s changing outfits, from grey (S24/S25) to brown (S26/BF) to cream (NAs) to his ‘TV Movie’ clothes. I ended up placing the audios between ‘Timewyrm’ and ‘Love and War’ in my head.
However, once I actually started reading the NAs, this placement didn’t make any sense, for all of the reasons stated above in my previous comment. I also thought, hey, the Doctor’s outfit doesn’t really matter. He can change his clothes whenever he likes, and maybe he doesn’t want to remind an amnesiac Ace about the time in his life when he wore the “safari” suit. Their relationship was pretty rough in the NAs. I didn’t fully accept the “New Adventures before Main Range” placement until I heard ‘The Prisoner’s Dilemma,’ but it has been dominant in my mind for such a long time now.
But then ‘A Life of Crime’ happened. I put off listening to it for some time while I was reading the New Adventures, but when I finally heard it, I was utterly confused by Ace’s characterisation. She was acting like she’d just left Iceworld, with nitro-9 a plenty and her maturity thrown out the window. There was bit of this in the last Hex trilogy, but I still found it a bit more believable with her connection to Hex. I’m probably overreacting, and I’d like to know if this aspect of the 7/Ace/Mel audios gets better. I’m actually pretty excited to hear Mel back with the Doctor and Ace.
So, there are two ways I interpret the timeline now. One is that the Main Range audios take place before the New Adventures novels, with the Doctor wiping Ace’s memories and reinfecting her with the Cheetah Virus prior to ‘Timewyrm: Genesys.’ The other is that Main Range audios take place before the New Adventures novels, but that Ace’s development has been so messed up that her personality at this point is all over the place. I’m really not sure which of these options I prefer, and I’ve only just finished “No Future” in the NAs, so I don’t have the full context of the series. Apparently the Doctor starts visibly aging and wearing his TV Movie clothes in the later novels.
It’s probably best to just treat them separately, which I find easy enough in the moments I’m reading or listening to something new. However, when I start to sit back and think about it, and I can’t help but want to meld everything together into something monstrously detailed and silly.
At least the Gallifrey stuff seems surprisingly neat and tidy. 🙂

Oops, made a mistake. The second last paragraph should say:

The other is that Main Range audios take place AFTER the New Adventures novels, but that Ace’s development has been so messed up that her personality at this point is all over the place.

        Hi Rojan.

Glad you like my Seventh Doctor timeline.

It took me a while to compile all the stories featuring the Seventh Doctor back in 2015. Over the years, the timeline has changed consistently as for all the ‘Doctor Who’ timelines I’ve done. But it has been fun to do with all the feedback I’ve been getting on my timelines to improve them.

        Many thanks,

        Tim. 🙂

    Hi bafflementanddevotion.

The Seventh Doctor’s Timeline is a tricky one.

I was initially following what ‘The History of the Doctor’ version of the Seventh Doctor’s timeline seem to have. I’ve not read many of the New Adventures novels as they’re yet to be read on my reading list of books for ‘Doctor Who’.

However, based on your arguments and your seemingly expert knowledge of the NA books, I’ve updated both the Seventh Doctor’s and Ace’s timelines accordingly with your helpful suggestions. I’ve swapped the MRs and NAs around accordingly.

If you have any more suggestions to improve on Seven and Ace’s timelines, please feel free to comment.

    Hi Tim,

I’m so glad you’ve placed the NAs before the Main range. I’ve been working on my own Ace Timeline for a while now & as far as I’m concerned this is the only order to put it in! There’s just way too much character development & ageing in the NA for Ace that would have to be nullified otherwise….

And Timewyrm: Genesis/early NAs have the perfect explanation!…
By Survival Ace is 16/17. But by Timewyrn Revelation Ace is Early 20s/21. And in Timewyrm Genesis, 3 books earlier she has her memories accidentally wiped & remembers nothing beyond her last season where she was 16/17. The Doctor says, very non-committaly, that she’s had all her memories returned – but the truth is that there’s a whopping 4 YEAR GAP! Evidently Ace knows her current age, but can’t seen to grasp that theres this gap in her memory….

So quite obviously this is where Ace, Hex, Mel & probably Raine fit (Raine’s placement is, in the light of the Quantum Possibility Engine, contingent on whether Ace met Narvin while at the Academy & whether she retains those memories).

Further more, Ace was at least 34 by the time she left Paris (post-Set Piece, she was based in Paris from age 27 – approx 34) & ended up on Gallifrey (also with Chris Cwej), in Lungbarrow. And that neatly transitions into her presents in the Gallifrey series & her subsequent presence in the New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield; Followed by her presence as owner of A.C.E. on contemporary Earth , in Class.

By the way, I also have a pretty good placement for Death Comes to time & Ground Zero, which I can share if you’re interested.

Anyway, from one Tim B to another Tim B, thanks for the work on the Timelines, they’re very satisfying 🙂

      Hi Tim.

Thanks for your comments. Glad you’ve found my Seventh Doctor timeline helpful in creating your own for Ace. You certainly have insight and knowledge about the NA stories compared to me. I’ve only read a small number of NAs and MAs from Virginia as well as other BBC books. I’ve enjoyed them but there’s so much to get through it’s trying to find the time to read them.

I appreciate other people’s insight into this area and I ‘m glad you approve of the work I’ve done here. I’ve had help over the years from other people to put these timelines together.

Yes that will be much appreciated. I welcome any suggestions to improve my timelines. Let me know where you think ‘Death Comes To Time’ and ‘Ground Zero’ should go. Ah! Ace’s appearance in ‘Class’. I must add to her timeline.

Many thanks Tim. Glad you approve.

      From your namesake, Tim. 🙂

In the instance of the Doctor and Ace, across four different Media, is it possible the only way to reconcile it is accept it can’t fit into one linear coherent timeline, and this is my take on it, what we are dealing with is branching and intersecting reality streams, possibly due to the Seventh Doctors influence and machinations. Memory wipes aside, we’ve seen two Ace’s die, in Ground Zero and Loving the Alien, but we have seen the versions oh her that go on to found A.C.E., as well as the Death Comes to time, human Timelord version.
Ace is probably quite the complex space-time event, partly to do with the 7th Doctors influence and interference.
There was a time the Comics and the New Adventures were in synch, and then Ground Zeros happened, and Ace dies in that But it’s young Wicked, Nitro-Nine slinging Ace, not the former space corps, times vigilante Ace, who was living in France if I recall.
In fact, when Ace is killed in Loving the Alien, an Ace from a Divergent timeline turns up and the Doctor ends up traveling with this version. All a person is is memories after all.
I don’t have the answers but I would feel that it is well within the 7th Doctors character to edit and make changes in Ace’s timeline, just to get it right. What we see is the result or side effects.
It’s all very Timey Wimey. And frankly, I’m happy to accept it that way.
    Spinoff media is like that.

Oh, yes the Seventh Doctor is assigned the duty of collecting the Masters remains in Lungbarrow….however it’s the Doctor we are talking about here, theres little to indicate he went directly there.as he says
“I just remembered. I haven’t been Merlin yet!”

    Hello everyone.

Based on elgranto’s arguments, I’ve decided to place ‘Lungbarrow’ at the end of the Virgin New Adventures and before the Big Finish audios featuring Seven and Ace before they met Hex.

I can see there’s already been a lot of discussion about what order this timeline should go in, and I suggest that seeing as it’s essentially impossible to make a good coherent timeline with every 7th Doctor story, you could make 2 or even more separate versions of the 7th Doctor timeline on the website, each non-exhaustive. I get this might annoy people who want everything to be in one timeline, but you could leave the current one as ‘7th Doctor Timeline 3’

The timeline in my head (7th Doctor Timeline 4?) runs thusly, although it involves altering at least one story:
Time and the Rani —> Survival
    The Fearmonger —> The Rapture
A Life of Crime —> The Quantum Possibility Engine
The Harvest —> Signs and Wonders (or Gods and Monsters)
Signs and Wonders (or Gods and Monsters) would have Ace leave instead of Hex/Hector and Sally, Then there would be a run of adventures with 7 Hex and Sally; an introduction story for Benny (Love and War is not in this timeline); a run of stories with 7 Hex Sally and Benny; a departure for Hex and Sally, which would lead us into…
Infinite Requiem —> The Room With No Doors (then Lungbarrow?)
Harvest of the Sycorax, Klein Trilogy, Dark Universe, The Psychic Circus, Subterfuge, Master

So it’s: Mel, Ace, Ace + Mel, Ace + Hex, Hex + Sally, Hex + Sally + Benny, Benny,
Benny + Chris + Roz, Chris + Roz, Chris, Alone (including Klein)

The only VNA I’ve experienced is Big Finish’s adaptation of Damaged Goods, so if there are any problems with having Benny never meet Ace then pls tell.
Also I haven’t got to Gods and Monsters or Signs and Wonders yet in the Black and White arc so if it would be very difficult to make Ace leave in one of those stories then that’s another problem.

      Hi Joe.

I take it this all from the ‘At Childhood’s End’ novel that’s just come out. I’ve yet to read that book, but I can tell there’s a lot of discussion regarding Ace and the Seventh Doctor’s timelines in that regard.

I’ll need to find some time to reorganise things in both the Seventh Doctor and Ace’s timelines, but thanks for your suggestions. Hopefully I’ll untangle things eventually.

Must have taken a lot of head banging to sort them out 🙂
It actually wasn’t from At Childhood’s End – I haven’t even read it yet, but this has made me more interested – I just assumed that the Seventh Doctor’s constant machinations resulted in the timelines diverging and weaving around each other.
The First one is definitely the best one though.
        Ground zero.
        Ace Dies.
        The End.

        Hi Joe.

It’s always a challenge to update these ‘Doctor Who’ timelines, especially with the Seventh Doctor’s timeline which seems to be constantly changing. But it’s fun to keep updating these timelines when new things about them can be added.

I’ll have to check out more audios, books and comic to verify the stories’ placements.
Otherwise, I’m glad you’re enjoying how I’ve put them together.

Not that you included it in the timeline, but I hereby retract that bit about adventures with Hex and Sally because it’s silly.
The new timeline in my head is as follows (mostly the same really):

Seasons 24, 25 and 26, including other stories set then.
Big Finish Solo Ace (maybe Cat’s Cradle and Nightshade too)
    Big Finish Ace and Mel
Big Finish Ace and Hex (ending in Gods and Monsters)
[Either Ace leaves in Gods and Monsters, and we have a new Benny introduction story, or Ace stays on and Love and War happens right after Gods and Monsters]
VNAs from Infinite Requiem to The Room with No Doors (including BF’s new Adventures box set)
Harvest of the Sycorax, the Klein trilogy, the current trilogy (people from the future, look at the timestamp), Master, The TV Movie

I know I said the 7th Doctor’s timeline branches and weaves about, but this one just makes so much sense to me.

    Hi there

I’ve been following your timelines for a while and find them a great resource for sorting what order to store my novels etc in, however I’ve noticed that the 7th Doctor’s timeline seems to have changed a bit since I last look at it. As the the Doctor would later say himself, its all a it “timey wimey” lol. I’m guessing the version up now is the latest version though?

Do you have a version of the timeline without reference to material not including in the books and audio ranges [ie not including the comic strips or other bits such as DiT]?

I’m trying to organise my 7th Doctor novels as audios and like you say yourself, his timeline jumps around so much it is hard to keep track of him but I am trying to keep focused on one line so I can store things in some sort of “order” although no doubt I’ll change it again later.

Can you help in any way or offer any suggestions as to the best route to follow through this timeline other than ignoring the comic strip stories which is what I currently do. Of course any comic strip storylines which are important or which feature main characters will get added to my printed timeline once I’ve sorted the order of the books and audios out.

Anyhow keep up the great work with these timelines, their always great to read.

    Best Wishes
    Matt
PS Do you have a printed version of this timeline you can email so I can print it out?

      Hi Matthew.

      Thank you for your message.

Yes, what you’re currently seeing is the latest version of the Seventh Doctor’s timeline. Of course that will change as time goes on. The Seventh Doctor’s timeline is a beast of a timeline to work on as I’m not sure where all the stories are supposed to go and I’m working on suggestions, advice and tips people give me. It’s also guesswork as I’ve not seen, read or heard every Seventh Doctor story there is to know about.

I like to keep all the listed stories in one place, so I don’t keep multiple versions of the Seventh Doctor’s timeline. The timeline is confusing enough as it is without me doing multiple timelines that don’t include the comics and books and just have the TV and audio stories in them.

I can’t think of a best route to follow this timeline through as it’s all so complicated with so many of the stories not matching with each other in terms of books, audios and comics. Mind you, the stories highlighted in purple should be a good indicator on how you should follow the Seventh Doctor’s timeline.

I’m glad you find my timelines useful. Thank you for using them. Unfortunately I don’t email timelines to people as I like to keep things private on the e-mail side. There should be an option where you can print off the timeline using the print button at the bottom of the webpage somewhere.

      Hope this helps.

      Many thanks for your comments.

      Take care and best wishes,

      Tim. 🙂

I find that the VNAs and Big Finish involving Ace cant really be naturally squashed together – her character development would make no sense, so its best to just view them as 2 separate timelines, though the stuff after Ace probably fits fine (not that I’ve read it)
probably said this in a comment ages ago but the order I follow (bc I’m more bf than vna) is:
TV, Colditz, Black and White arc, Love and War (but changed to reference Hex), then the VNAs from Human Nature up to maybe Lungbarrow, followed by the audios like the Klein trilogy, Dark Universe, Subterfuge and Master

I’d just order the novels and audios seperataly if I were you, bc they do their own thing and aren’t really compatible for a lot of it
the VNAs just go in order of publication, and the big finish audios often do the same – it goes solo Ace, Ace and Hex, Ace and Mel, who knows?, then the old 7 stuff like the Klein trilogy, Subterfuge, Dark Universe and Master
as for following the timeline – just ignoring the comic stories is the best way as far as I can see (if you don’t care about them that is), it’s what I do

Thanks for checking. Yes, you’re right, it is supposed to ‘The Blood Furnace’, not ‘The Burning Furnance’. Apologies. I must have had ‘The Burning Prince’ on my mind when editing that in the Seventh Doctor’s timeline. I’ll amend this for the Seventh Doctor, Ace and Mel’s timelines accordingly.

      Hi Connor,

I’ve not heard Volume 1 of ‘The Last Day’ yet. Eyespider doesn’t have any information on where it’s placed in the Seventh Doctor’s timeline either and so far, the first half of ‘The Last Day’ has been released. I’ll add a temporary placement for ‘The Last Day’ on the Seventh Doctor’s and other relevant characters’ timelines for now and return to update the placements later.

      Many thanks,
