The Master, Odin and Vikings with the Third Doctor and Jo
The third story of the ‘Doctor Who’ Puffin e-shorts series is ‘The Spear of Destiny’ by Marcus Sedgwick. Here’s a YouTube interview with Marcus Sedgwick.
Marcus Sedgwick is well-known for writing novels such as ‘Floodland’ and ‘The Dark Horse’, but he’s also written book series like the ‘Raven Mysteries’ and ‘Elf Girl and Raven Boy’. I’ve not read many books by Marcus Sedgewick, but I can tell he’s into Viking mythology and he writes a good tale here!
‘The Spear of Destiny’ features the Third Doctor and Jo. The story is divided into twelve chapters. It’s set after the Doctor becomes freed of his exile on Earth by the Time Lords. The audiobook version of this story is read by Marcus Sedgewick. I would have liked Katy Manning to have read this adventure.
Don’t get me wrong, Marcus Sedgewick is a decent narrator, but Katy Manning would’ve brought the Third Doctor and Jo to life with her voices for them. The story starts in 1973(?!) where the Doctor and Jo are about to steal a magical Viking spear that was once Odin’s at a London museum. 😮
When the robbery fails, the Doctor and Jo travel back in time to the Vikings ages where they confront Odin, his son Thor and Njord as well as the evil Master. This story is very well-versed in Viking history and mythology, which I really enjoyed in connection to the titular ‘spear of destiny’. 🙂
I was thrilled to find the Master making an appearance in this story. It’d be wrong for the Master not to appear, especially in a story celebrating the Third Doctor era for the 50th anniversary of ‘Doctor Who’. The Brigadier makes a special appearance as he meets up with Jo and the Doctor in 1973(?!) 🙂
‘The Spear of Destiny’ rating – 9/10
